The Center for Quantum Devices (QDev) comprises several research laboratories and condensed-matter projects on the highest international level. To support a new ERC synergy grant on the topic of exploring non-local and non-abelian material systems, we are looking for a highly motivated individual to organize, maintain and improve the associated experimental laboratory in Copenhagen and assist in managing teams of scientists.

The ideal candidate is familiar in at least one of the areas of research lab equipment infrastructure, mechanical/electrical engineering of experimental setups, or low-temperature techniques.

The scope includes managing lab improvements, maintenance, and expansions, assisting with hiring and acquainting new scientists, as well as working with the local workshops and our equipment suppliers to guarantee up time and access to all lab facilities.

The position will be critical to support our experimental work on the campus of Copenhagen University. The responsibility will also include interaction with our suppliers for scheduled maintenance, immediate repair, and upgrade work of our equipment (including cryostats, measurement electronics, vacuum pumps, and cooling compressors). We seek an organized applicant with problem solving skills, with a keen eye for the evolving infrastructure needs of the lab, as well as good interpersonal skills for day-to-day interaction with students and staff members.

As a Laboratory Coordinator of one of the premier quantum labs of Europe, the position will provide the candidate with valuable experience, as well as many opportunities to make a positive impact in a highly dynamic environment of scientists and engineers trying to push the boundaries of quantum science.

  • Work schedule is full time – some weekend work may be required
  • No travel required
  • Interaction with scientists, students, staff, university workshop, and external suppliers
  • Physical work area: Center for Quantum Devices at the Niels Bohr Institute, Copenhagen University
  • Official workspace type: Laboratory environment
What makes this role interesting:

  • Purpose of the team: Operate quantum devices made from hybrid materials to test non-local and non-abelian phenomena. Explore connections to other activities at QDev and opportunities beyond QDev.
  • Overall laboratory purpose: Development of diverse solid-state quantum technologies
  • Reason for the hire: Lab size has outgrown the capacity of existing staff and provides a key opportunity to the continued success of the team
  • Typical tasks and rhythm: Lab improvements, problem solving, new installations, organizing repairs and maintenance, general lab organization
  • One of the largest quantum labs in Europe
  • Broad spectrum of recently purchased high-end equipment
  • Local workshop and service and maintenance contracts are in place
  • Administrative support through the university
  • Lab space still evolving – planned new equipment and opportunities for improvements
The ideal Candidate should be:

  • Solution oriented, detail oriented, reliable, with a broad technical skillset
  • Fluent in English, oral and written (Danish is a plus)
  • Strong communication skills
  • Hands-on problem solver, engaging
  • Research and/or lab experience, ideally mechanical/electrical background
  • Ideally, physics background and/or familiarity with low-temperature techniques
  • Highly organized
  • Enjoys supporting the students in their experimental work and needs
  • Capable of, or willing to learn, facilitating hiring and integration of new staff members
  • Enjoys creating awareness with the lab users to maintain a functional structure
  • Interested in solving technical problems and planning ahead
