Lab technician within neurodegenerative research

The Department of Biomedicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as a Lab technician within the Jensen lab that focusses on research in neurodegenerative diseases as per 1 March 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a permanent full-time position.

We offer a vibrant international research environment where English is the preferred language in the laboratory, at meetings and at seminars. The Department employs some 450 people and covers a range of research areas within Biomedicine. We contribute to the Bachelor’s degree programs in medicine, molecular medicine, odontology and the Master’s degree programs in biomedical engineering and medical chemistry. Our infrastructure is well developed with modern laboratories, core and animal facilities. You will work either in the brand new ‘Skou Building’ or similar as we are in the process of modernizing our old facilities. You can read more about the department here and about the faculty here.

The Jensen laboratory is part of the neuroscience research center DANDRITE (Danish Research Institute of Translational Neuroscience) that involves groups at Department of Biomedicine and Department of Molecular Biology. The group consists currently of a lab technician/bioanalyst, phd students, postdocs and pregraduate students and comprises 5 nationalities.

Your job responsibilities
As lab technician, your primary tasks are both administrative and experimental. You contribute to the organization of the group through close contact to the group leader, manage purchases, supervise work safety, registrations of chemicals and other tasks that may develop. In your daily work, you have a close interaction with competent colleagues.

Your main tasks will consist of:

Administrative

  • Purchasing, registration of purchases and release of payment in Indfak
  • Registration of chemicals
  • Preparation of user manuals
  • Keeping track of safety regulations and preparation of safety precautions
  • Packing and shipment of samples

Experimental
Primarily protein chemical work but also cell culture and molecular biological tests. Examples are:
  • Extraction of tissue and subsequent fractionation using centrifugation and chromatography
  • Protein analysis (BCA)
  • Gel electrophoresis, staining of gels, immunoblotting, documentation using image analysis software
  • Antibody purification and characterization including dot blotting analysis
  • Protein expression in E coli and subsequent extraction and purification
  • Chromatography, HPLC, gel filtration, ion exchange and reverse phase
  • Dialysis and lyophilization
  • PCR based genotyping of mise including purification of DNA from mouse tails
  • qPCR
  • Various plate-based assays e.g. absorbance (ELISA), fluorescence and luminescence
  • Cell culture, plasmid-based transfection
  • Immunofluorescence microscopy
  • Plasmid expression in E coli and purification
  • Autoclaving

Additional
  • The group conducts a series of projects in parallel and the technician should be familiar with participation in several at a time
  • The group is engaged in several national and international collaborations and it is expected that the successful applicant will learn to interact directly with collaborators

You will report to the prof. Poul Henning Jensen.

Your competences
You have a background as lab technician or bioanalyst with experience from experimental research. Experience with protein, tissue and antibody related experiments will be considered an advantage. Given the size and international nature of the group combined with the administrative tasks, experience from similar labs will be considered as advantageous.

As a person, you have good interpersonal skills, are friendly and helpful and able to contribute to a good work environment.

We expect you to be skilled in oral and written English.

We expect to conduct interviews in week 3 (1st round) and week 4 (2nd round). You may be asked to appear in person for the interviews.

Terms of employment
Terms of employment and pay are regulated by the collective agreement between the Ministry of Finance and HK laboratory technicians or Danish Association of Biomedical Laboratory Scientists.
