Laboratory Technician or Biomedical Laboratory Scientist (bioanalytiker) for the Phenomics Platform

The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research

University of Copenhagen

We are looking for a Laboratory Technician or Biomedical Laboratory Scientist (bioanalytiker) to join the Phenomics Platform team to commence April 1, 2021 or after agreement.

About us

CBMR is a vibrant international research environment with a focus on interdisciplinary collaboration. Our researchers share a common purpose as they seek to transform the basic understanding of the mechanisms involved in metabolic health and disease, and to accelerate this knowledge toward new prevention and treatment strategies. The Center’s research has resulted in seminal discoveries as to how genes, hormones, and environmental factors influence metabolic health and disease throughout life. You can read more about us here: www.cbmr.ku.dk.

The Phenomics Platform is central to the research activities at CBMR and aims to accelerate Center research projects by making large-scale molecular, clinical and registry data and human biological samples available for research. In the Platform, we manage and analyze longitudinal biomedical data obtained from deeply molecularly and clinically phenotyped human samples. In total, we integrate data from over 200,000 biological samples and our measurements include information on genetic variation, periodic changes of lifestyle, anthropometrics and biochemical measurements. In addition, thousands of these samples include detailed genetic, transcriptomic, serum metabolomics, and intestinal and saliva microbiome measurements. The Platform is a team of 11 employees and is headed by Associate Professor Niels Grarup. Read more about the platform at https://cbmr.ku.dk/platforms/phenomics/.

Your tasks

The work will be executed in close collaboration with other lab technicians and a number of laboratory assistants. Other work areas may include assistance in array-based genotyping, assistance in human physiological studies (i.e. performing anthropometric measurements, blood sampling, oral glucose tolerance tests etc. on research project participants).

Primary tasks:

  • Organize and coordinate the daily work related to the handling of human fecal samples
    • Day-to-day supervision and coordination of the work of 5-6 part-time laboratory assistants
    • Set up efficient and standardized work processes for handling of biological samples
    • Update databases
  • Practical daily laboratory work
    • Freeze dry, aliquot, and store human fecal samples
    • Prepare sample material (label writing, labelling, etc.)
    • Assist with general laboratory tasks
    • Operate and maintain the freeze dryer instrument (CoolSafe-95)
Possible other tasks could include:

  • Handle other types of human biobank samples
  • Assist in array-based genotyping of human samples
  • Assist in human physiology studies with blood sampling, oral glucose tolerance tests, etc.
  • Assist the academic researchers with ad hoc tasks
