PhD fellow in Plant Nutrition

Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship in Plant Nutrition commencing 01.06.2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.  
Description of the scientific environment 
The successful candidate will be working in the Plant Nutrition research group at PLEN, which currently is composed of 28 members and the project will be coordinated in close collaboration with Assistant Professor Daniel Persson and Professor Søren Husted. Our research ambitions are high and we strive to publish our work in leading journals. The research environment is vibrant, friendly and international, boasting scientists and students with diverse academic backgrounds such as: plant science, molecular biology and analytical chemistry. The PLEN research laboratories are located in central Copenhagen at the Frederiksberg Campus and will soon move to new and attractive buildings at the newly established “Copenhagen Plant Science Center”.  Copenhagen ranks among the most liveable cities of the world and has several times been voted the number one capital in annual quality of life surveys. 
Project description 
We will improve the basis for developing crop plants with better nutrient use efficiency. This will be done by investigating the impacts of physical root barriers and passage cells on the movement of mineral ions from the soil solution to the vascular tissue of crops, which represents a pivotal yet understudied area of plant nutrition. We will develop and employ cutting-edge-technologies that allow bio-imaging and quantification of ion gradients and stable-isotope fluxes of ions at tissue and single cell levels. We will take a multi-elemental approach and combine ICP-MS based ionomics with molecular approaches to investigate and map ion transport pathways in roots and analyze how they influence nutrient use efficiency in crops. Our target will be the important crop species barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and we will extensively use an in-house collection of genotypes with contrasting nutrient use efficiencies for selected plant nutrients.

Job description 
The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student at SCIENCE are: 

  • First and foremost to complete the milestones and deliverables set for the research project 
  • Attend PhD courses 
  • Write scientific papers as well as your PhD thesis 
  • Teach and disseminate your research 
  • To stay at an external research institution for a few months, preferably abroad 
Formal requirements  
Applicants should hold an MSc degree in plant science, molecular biology, biochemistry or analytical chemistry with very good marks and English skills. As criteria for the assessment of your qualifications, emphasis will also be laid on any previous publications and relevant work experience. 
It is important that the applicant can document solid skills in plant science, molecular techniques and analytical chemistry. It is moreover important that you are highly motivated for a project, which is heavily laboratory oriented.  You also need to be able to document your interpersonal qualifications when applying. 
Terms of employment  
The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.  
Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.  
The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 317.458 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 43.851). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
