A 3-year PhD fellowship is available at the DynaMo Center, a Center of Excellence within plant biology funded by the Danish National Research Foundation. The Center is hosted by the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen.

The position commences 1 October 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter .

Project description

The root microbiome composition is largely determined by the soil inoculum, with a distinct contribution from the host. The molecular mechanisms by which the host influences its rhizobiome are only beginning to be discovered. In this project, our goal is to understand the underlying molecular mechanisms by which plants select microbial traits as well as the physiological significance of the establishment of these (beneficial) interactions.

We are seeking a talented PhD fellow who is eager to work with us in deciphering the mechanism of plant-microbe interactions in our model system for improving plant health and nutrition. The person will have a great opportunity to advance his/her basic research skills in this cross-disciplinary project including both molecular plant biology and microbiology. The tasks will be diverse and include:

  • Screening and identification of beneficial microorganisms for nutrient delivery and disease resistance in selected soils
  • Screening chemical cues for establishment of beneficial plant-microbe interaction
  • Mechanistic studies with Arabidopsis mutants
  • Translation of the finding to Brassica crops.

Job description
The position is available for a 3-year period and your key tasks as a PhD student at SCIENCE are:

  • To manage and carry through your PhD research project, in collaboration with other project partners

Formal requirements

Alarmingly, childhood and adolescent NAFLD is more likely to progress to steatohepatitis (NASH) and hepatic fibrosis compared to that of adult patients, denoting that children are more prone to suffer serious consequences of the disease. Studies in humans and in animal models show that prenatal exposure to adverse maternal nutrition is linked to postnatal metabolic dysfunctions such as obesity, insulin resistance and hyperlipidemia, all associated with NAFLD. Moreover, epidemiological data have shown a positive correlation between NAFLD in adolescents and maternal pre-pregnancy obesity and pregnancy weight gain. Together, this suggests that fetal nutrition may program offspring prenatally to develop NAFLD after birth. By investigating the effects of a maternal high fat diet on hepatic health in offspring, this projects targets the hypothesis that a high fat diet during gestation sensitizes offspring towards a NAFLD NASH phenotype, promoting disease frequency and severity, potentially affecting the response to intervention. Our group and research

Project description

Alarmingly, childhood and adolescent NAFLD is more likely to progress to steatohepatitis (NASH) and hepatic fibrosis compared to that of adult patients, denoting that children are more prone to suffer serious consequences of the disease.
