PhD fellowship in computational biology

We are offering a PhD fellowship in Computational Biology commencing 1 September, 2020.

Our group and research

The Weischenfeldt lab is working on delineating the mutational mechanisms and clonal evolution of cancer. We use a wide range of computational and experimental approaches including WGS, single-cell, and long-read sequencing together with chromatin conformation techniques to understand how cancers mutate and evolve, which we are applying to cancer patient material in close collaboration with clinical colleagues at the hospital.

Project description

The aim of the PhD project is to use computational genomics approaches on whole-genome sequencing material to study tumor evolution from patient-derived tumor biopsy samples. The project involves studying patterns of clonal evolution with a focus on complex rearrangements in cancers.

The project will involve analysis of several layers of comics data integration and can be divided into three sub-projects:

  1. Develop and apply methods to reconstruct clonal evolution from primary and relapse tumor material
  2. Identify recurrent patterns of selection
  3. Characterise processes leading to treatment resistance and identify potential targetable mutations.

The successful candidates will be joining a larger team of cross-disciplinary computational, basic and clinical cancer researchers, and will be exposed to a range of methodologies and approaches. The PhD student will also have a lot of possibilities to develop own ideas.

Starting date: 1 September 2020 or after agreement.
Duration: 3 years as a PhD student
