The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research was established at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, to conduct fundamental research on metabolism. The Clemmensen Lab is recruiting a PhD fellow with a passion for small molecule chemistry and with a keen interest in translational pharmacology and energy metabolism. The fellow will work in a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment with project collaborators and PhD co-supervisors: Prof. Bente Frølund and Prof. Kristian Strømgaard, Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology and Center for Biopharmaceuticals, University of Copenhagen.

Project Description   
The project focuses on engineering new drug classes that influences appetite-regulating circuits in the brain and that ultimately could give rise to new innovative therapeutic strategies that can correct obesity and its metabolic co-morbidities.  
The successful applicants will work in the Frølund Lab equipped for small molecule synthesis, as well as in the Strømgaard Lab preparing peptides and peptide-small molecule conjugates.  
This is a challenging project that entails briding results and insights from several fields including medicinal chemistry, molecular pharmacology and human biology. The candidate, however, will receive unparalleled supervision from expert researchers in each of the designated research areas and will integrate into a vibrant and transdiscplinary research environment.  
Required qualifications  
As an applicant you must have: 

  • Obtained a Master’s degree in Organic Chemistry/Medicinal Chemistry, Peptide chemistry  or related areas prior to the starting date 
  • Fluency in English and excellent written and oral communication skills   
Preferred qualifications 
Candidates experienced with small molecule chemistry, peptide chemistry and a basic knowledge of molecular biology and pharmacology will be preferred.   
Job description 
Your key tasks as a PhD fellow at the Faculty are to: 
  • Carry through an independent research project under supervision 
  • Write scientific articles and the PhD thesis on the grounds of your research project 
  • Complete PhD courses or other equivalent education corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS points 
  • Obtain experience with teaching or other types of dissemination related to your PhD project 
  • Participate in the undergraduate teaching of students in pharmaceutical sciences
  • Participate in national and international congresses and scientific meetings  
  • Stay at an external research institution, preferably abroad

The holder of the position will report to Professor Bente Frølund, Assoc. Professor Christoffer Clemmensen, and Professor Kristian Strømgaard.  The holder of the position must be able to interact with staff at all levels, both internally and externally, regarding relevant research topics.        
Employment Conditions   
The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research is seeking a PhD fellows 
in medicinal chemistry. The position is offered for a period of three years and employment is governed by the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).   
The successful candidate must apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the SUND Graduate School. Employment as a PhD fellow will be conditional on successful enrolment in the PhD program.   
The starting salary for candidates with an MSc degree will be a minimum of DKK 317,458 (December 2017 level) plus pension contribution, with the possibility of salary negotiation.   
Starting date is 1 May 2018 or as soon as possible hereafter.
