PhD fellowship in Wound Infection Peptidomics

PhD fellowship in Wound Infection Peptidomics
Department of Pharmacy
Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences (SUND)
University of Copenhagen

The Department of Pharmacy is offering a three-year PhD fellowship within the field of biomarker discovery in mass-spectrometry based wound infection peptidomics. The PhD project will be carried out within the newly established LEO Foundation Center for Cutaneous Drug Delivery (LFCCDD), which is funded over a 10-year period by the LEO Foundation and the University of Copenhagen. The center aims to be recognized as an international excellence center, performing state-of-the-art research and creating innovative solutions within cutaneous drug delivery of both small and large molecules.
The successful applicant will be a member of the Novel Biological Models group and will have the opportunity for cross-disciplinary research in collaboration with the other sections of the centre as well as external collaborators. The fellowship is available from the 1st of June 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Project description
The disease burden of failing skin repair and non-healing ulcers is extensive and represents significant challenges in health care systems worldwide. Therefore, there is a great an unmet need for novel diagnostic approaches to better predict wound infection and healing.
A major contributor to wound healing impairment is uncontrolled and excessive protease activity, from both endogenous and bacterial origin. Proteolytic protein and/or peptide patterns could therefore demonstrate healing activity and bacterial infection.
Using a recently established peptidomics approach, the PhD project will focus on various endogenous and bacterial proteases, study their interactions and determine their substrates during wounding. The main goal of our research is the development of early diagnostics and novel therapeutic concepts to target non-healing infected wounds unresponsive to currently available wound care regimes.

The candidate will be a member of the Novel Biological Models group within the LEO Foundation Center for Cutaneous Drug Delivery and will work in close collaboration with Bispebjerg Hospital, Lund University and the DTU Proteomics Core Facility. Furthermore, she/he will have the opportunity for further cross-disciplinary collaborations with the other groups of the centre.
