PhD in the societal impact of organization theory

Copenhagen Business School, Department of Organization invites applications for a vacant PhD scholarship within the field of organization theory. The PhD scholarship is part of the collaborative research project, entitled “Turning theory into action: Undesirable consequences of implementing organization and management theory” (details available upon request), which is funded by the Velux Foundation’s core group program and led by Professor Eva Boxenbaum and Professor Renate Meyer. The scholarship focuses on how organizational actors interpret organization theory when they implement it in practice. The PhD candidate will investigate translation processes as well as the impact of these processes on the studied organizations and society more broadly. The candidate should be familiar with organizational institutional theory (e.g., institutional translation) and qualitative research, and interested in studying the societal impact of organizational research. The scholarship involves extensive empirical fieldwork in Denmark, and a willingness to reside in the Copenhagen area for the main part of the scholarship. The position includes close collaboration with the project team (the project leaders and two post-docs) in an integrated team structure, hosted within the Department of Organization at Copenhagen Business School.

Department of Organization (IOA) pursues a problem-oriented, business in society approach to understanding and intervening in organizations and institutions. Our research is driven by an interest in organization as a practical, situated, contested and changing matter. Our approach is interdisciplinary and combines social-scientific traditions such as organization theory, sociology, science and technology studies, political economy, and social psychology in the analysis of organizing processes and their outcomes. Methodologically, we value qualitative research methods highly and often adopt case study, field work methodology or social network analysis.

The teaching responsibilities associated with the scholarship comprise undergraduate teaching and supervision in subjects such as organization theory, organizational analysis, and qualitative methodology.

The Department will give priority to applicants with high grades from previous university education.

The three-year PhD program at CBS allows PhD candidates to conduct research under the supervision of CBS professors, supported by research training courses. The program is highly international, and PhD candidates are expected to participate in international research conferences and to spend time abroad as a visiting PhD student. See the CBS homepage for more information about the PhD program, http://uk.cbs.dk/phd .

It is also required that the applicant shows an interest in joining the Department’s research environment, see http://uk.cbs.dk/ioa

Copenhagen Business School has a broad commitment to the excellence, distinctiveness and relevance of its teaching and research programmes. Candidates who wish to join us should demonstrate enthusiasm for working in an organization of this type (highlighting, for example, relevant business, educational and dissemination activities).

For further information please contact: Professor Eva Boxenbaum, e-mail: eb.ioa@cbs.dk.

Information about the department can be found at www.cbs.dk/ioa.
