PhD position in Helium ion microscopy

SDU NanoSYD invites applications for a 3-year PhD position in Sønderborg. NanoSYD is part of the Mads Clausen Institute at the Faculty of Engineering at University of Southern Denmark.

Job description

The research topic of the PhD project is “Advanced imaging of biological samples using ion beam microscopy and related techniques”. In this project, the PhD student will use Helium ion microscopy (HIM) as the primary technique. She or he will determine optimum imaging conditions and imaging performance for several kinds of biological tissue. Moreover, the HIM results should be compared against results obtained using complementary microscopy methods including optical and electron beam techniques. Finally, the PhD student should implement and test correlative microscopy procedures. This PhD project is part of the Interreg 5a project “CellTom” (http://www.celltom.eu) and will therefore involve substantial collaborations with the other CellTom project partners. The work will include:

  • Develop and optimize procedures for HIM imaging of various biological samples
  • Image with complementary techniques and compare against HIM results
  • Develop imaging substrate and corresponding procedures that enable to locate the same spot with different microscopes
  • Perform correlative microscopy combining HIM and optical techniques

The PhD work includes:

  • An independent research project completed under academic supervision.
  • A course program of an extent corresponding to 30 ECTS.
  • Participating in teaching and other dissemination activities.
  • Participating in an active research environment, including stays at other research institutions.
  • Completion and defense of the PhD thesis.

The successful applicant should have:

  • A Master degree in physics, engineering, or related area.
  • A strong background and interest in advanced microscopy and preferably previous experience with ion beam microscopy.
  • Fluency in spoken and written English.
  • Good collaboration and communication skills.

The start date is 1st of September 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Conditions of employment

Employment as a PhD fellow is a 3-year salaried position. The employment will cease without further notice at the end of the 3-year period. Further information about salary and conditions of employment.

Employment is governed by the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.

An employed PhD fellow cannot have other paid work during the employment.

Requirements for the position
To be considered for the position it is required that the applicant meets the requirements for enrollment in the PhD school.

An assessment committee will assess all applications. Each applicant will receive his/her own assessment. An interview might be part of the assessment process.
