Design School Kolding hereby invite proposals for a PhD research project that focus on Play design and Young People.

This PhD scholarship deals with young people in the age group 12-15 years. The project seeks to explore following aims:

  1. How to support and design significant social spaces in young people's lives through the use of materiality, different forms of prototypes and/or temporary build environments. These can be playful and improvisational practices that create long-lasting but also temporary, intense and atmospheric social spaces and social connections between young people. The project must be pedagogically based, which is broadly framed in this PhD scholarship, and it can thus be young people in after-school, youth club or other more or less alternative youth-organized initiatives through leisure or urban projects. Hereby the project shall contribute with an understanding of how young people play and what play qualities is when being young.
  2. The PhD shall contribute with methodological knowledge and /or approaches about what play design methods are useful when designing with young people.

Inspiration to the design research methodology:

  • Research through design
  • Practise-based design research
  • Constructive design research
  • Programmatic design research
  • Design experiments
  • Design anthropology
  • User-centered design
  • Participatory design
  • Design-based research

It is expected that the applicant has a background within industrial design, textile design, fashion design, interaction design, communication design or another relevant design discipline.

The PhD student will be part of one of the three laboratories at Design School Kolding, the Design-for-Play lab.

The proposed PhD project must follow the general rules for the doctoral program. We will prioritize proposals specifically pursuing an article-based dissertation consisting of a plurality of components or articles that are related in content and/or method, which is unified by a summary of the three general aspects mentioned in section 5.2 in the guidelines.

It is a basic requirement in the application:

  • to demonstrate an understanding of the fields of research within play, young people and pedagogical domains
  • to indicate a specific focus of interest
  • to have a plausible and clearly expressed research question. You are welcome to add a few sub-research questions as well.
  • to have a clear description of the design research process by which the question(s) might be answered (what are you going to do to answer the question(s)?).
  • to include a preliminary research plan.

Applications will be assessed, among other factors, according to the richness and interest of the topic; the clarity of the explanation of how it might be explored; its relation to design research and practice, and especially the fit with the projects and teaching at Design School Kolding.

The application must have the following sections:
