PhD Position in Power Electronics

SDU Electrical Engineering (EE) invites applications for a 3-year PhD position in Sonderborg related to the Center for Industrial Electronics (www.sdu.dk/en/cie) . EE (www.sdu.dk/en/ee) is part of the Mads Clausen Institute (www.sdu.dk/en/mci) at the Faculty of Engineering at University of Southern Denmark.

Job description
The research topic of the PhD project is 'Advanced topologies for ultra-high-speed Drives'. The target is, via exploration of various approaches and in a combination of experiments and modeling to realize an ultra-high-speed motor drive. This work thus will include:



  • Definition of criteria to compare the different approaches and technologies by analytic, simulative and laboratory methods

  • Design and buildup of at least one demonstrator including (slim) gate driver, measurement circuits, power electronics and control

  • Test of the ultra-high-speed drives in real applications to proof the theoretically derived results  


The PhD work includes:



  • An independent research project completed under academic supervision

  • A course program of an extent corresponding to six months of studies (30 ECTS points)

  • Participating in teaching and other dissemination activities, such as conferences, corresponding to approximately six months of work.

  • Participating in active research environment, including stay at other, (mainly foreign) research institutions, of no less than 3 weeks and no more than 6 months

  • Completion of a PhD Thesis.

  • Defense of the PhD Thesis in public


The successful applicant is requested to have:



  • A Master degree in Electronics, Power Engineering or Electrical Engineering.

  • A strong background and interest in Power Electronics, with competencies in topologies, power devices, motor control, simulation and hardware implementation.

  • Fluency in spoken and written English.

  • Good collaboration and communication skills.

Employment as a PhD fellow is a 3-year salaried position. The employment will cease without further notice at the end of the 3-year period. Further information about salary and conditions of employment.


Employment is governed by the Protocol on PhD Research Fellows signed by the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations.


An employed PhD fellow cannot have other paid work during the employment.

An assessment committee will assess all applications. Each applicant will receive his/her own assessment. An interview might be part of the assessment process.
