PhD position in Quantum photonics

Project description
Quantum optics is going to play a large role in future computing, sensing, and secure communication. However, many demonstrations are laboratory-based, limiting the real-world applications and impact. Our objective is to realize a generic photonic integration platform (“optical chips”) for quantum optics, based on mature, foundry-based processes. Custom single-photon sources will be added as a back-end process. This platform will be robust, versatile and scalable, for feasible and credible transfer out of the laboratory. Thus, an actual quantum technology will be realized.

You will join the quantum nanophotonics group headed by Prof. Peter Lodahl (www.quantum-photonics.dk), which is focusing on the development of a solid-state platform for quantum optics based on semiconductor quantum dots and photonic integrated circuits. This project is a collaboration between the Niels Bohr Institute (NBI) at Copenhagen University and Aarhus University.

You will design and fabricate a gallium-arsenide-based single-photon source integrated on a silicon nitride photonic integrated circuit. NBI has developed state-of-the-art deterministic single-photon sources [1] using semiconductor quantum dots in photonic nanostructures [2]. This project is an effort towards embedding such sources into the ultra-low loss silicon nitride platform [3]. The fabrication of the chips will be carried out in our state-of-the-art laboratories for nanofabrication Quantech (www.quantech.nbi.ku.dk). Furthermore, you will work in close collaboration with our partners in Aarhus to test the integration with silicon nitride circuits.

The PhD student’s tasks will include:

  • Learn and understand solid-state quantum emitters and the fundamentals of quantum optics (MSc and PhD level courses are offered at NBI).
  • Acquire the fabrication skills required to build a single-photon source based on quantum dots in gallium arsenide (GaAs).
  • Learn the methods to perform hybrid integration of GaAs with silicon nitride in collaboration with our partners.
  • Characterize the single-photon sources in our optical laboratories.
  • Perform numerical simulations (finite difference time domain or finite elements) of our devices.
The PhD positions are for a 3-year period and the key tasks as a PhD student at Science are:

  • To manage and carry through your research project
  • Attend PhD courses
  • Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis
  • Teach and disseminate your research
  • To stay at an external research institution for a few months, preferably abroad
  • Work for the department
Qualifications and competences:

Applicants must have:

  • A Master’s degree in Applied Physics, Optical or Electrical Engineering, or similar, or about to get one.
  • Backround in optics, solid-state physics or optoelectronics, including experimental skills.
  • Basic knowledge of quantum physics and numerical methods for phsyics.
  • Interest in doing nanofabrication (previous experience working in cleanrooms is a plus) and experimental work.
  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration with other scientists and researchers.
Terms of employment
The positions are covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The starting salary is currently at a minimum DKK 322,642 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 55,172). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.

We are looking for scientists who are passionate about obesity biology and pharmacology and have a PhD degree in Cell Biology, Human Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology or a similar field of studies. Documented scientific excellence within obesity, the metabolic syndrome, molecular biology, endocrinology and/or neuroendocrinology is a must, preferably with hands-on experience with in vitro models (binding/functional assays) and in vivo pharmacology models of obesity. 

We expect you to be fluent and willing to communicate in English, be able to manage multiple activities in parallel and have a sound personal judgement to take decisions during your daily work. As a person, you are an outgoing team player with a strong personal drive and dedication. You have professional and personal impact that is reflected in your desire to take initiative. We expect you to have a well-structured and diligent approach at work, thrive in an innovative environment and bring a can-do attitude. Finally, you must have a strong work ethic and be willing to take responsibility for your own projects and progress.
