PhD positions within quantum nano-optics, plasmonics, and extreme light-matter interactions

The SDU Center for Nano Optics ( at the University of Southern Denmark (Odense Campus) invites applications for several PhD fellowships (3-year period) within the research area of quantum nano-optics. The application deadline is March 1st, 2020, and the prospective starting date is between April and September 2020. 
SDU Center for Nano Optics is an excellence center with cutting-edge fundamental research activities in plasmonics and metasurfaces. The activities of the center’s two PI’s (Prof. Bozhevolnyi & Prof. Mortensen) include the theoretical and experimental explorations of light-matter interactions at the interface of classical electrodynamics and quantum physics, with extreme spatial confinement of both light fields and matter. The center has world-class nano optics and quantum optics labs, and access to state-of-the-art nanofabrication and novel electron spectroscopy. In addition to local support, the center is supported by prestigious grants from the European Research Council (ERC Advanced Grant) and VILLUM FONDEN (Villum Investigator grant). The PIs are also Chairs of Technical Science in the Danish Institute for Advanced Study (, a national elite center at SDU that aims to inspire ground-breaking ideas by bringing together outstanding international researchers working in all disciplines.

We seek candidates possessing strong qualifications in theory, with a solid background in condensed-matter physics, quantum optics, nanophotonics, or related areas. The successful candidates will contribute to frontier research in areas where potentially both light and matter exhibit quantum mechanical behavior. Theory projects will benefit from techniques ranging from semiclassical to quantum-field theory, potentially also including time-dependent ab-initio approaches to account for material properties. Material platforms range from noble metals to 2D materials and artificial quantum emitters such as quantum dots and defect centers in nanocrystals.

Applicants for PhD positions must hold a MSc degree in physics, electrical engineering, or similar (equivalent to a Danish master's degree). Candidates about to complete their degree programme will also be considered and should attach a statement from their supervisors.

As a PhD student, you will be carrying out research under supervision of Prof. N. Asger Mortensen, and co-supervised by Assistant Profs. Christian Wolff, Christos Tserkezis, or Joel D. Cox, depending on the specific project.

Conditions of employment
Applicants are required to have a master’s degree (equivalent to a Danish master's degree) at the time of enrollment and employment. Employment as a PhD fellow is a 3-year salaried position (start salary amounts to approx. 3.378,- EURO per month incl. supplements).

Employment of a PhD fellow can only happen after the Head of the PhD School has approved the candidate for admission to the PhD school. Employment and enrollment will cease without further notice at the end of the period.

A PhD fellow is not allowed to have any kind of sideline employment, while enrolled as PhD fellow at the faculty.

The application must be in English and must include - the required forms must be found at the above mentioned Faculty website:
  • Completed TEK PhD application form for 5+3 applicants.
  • Cover letter. Upload in the field called “Project description”. Remember to clearly state if there has been any preliminary contact/discussion with the below mentioned supervisors. 
  • Detailed Curriculum Vitae, describing research, publication and teaching experience, computational skills and including personal contact information.
  • Candidates about to complete their degree programme must attach a statement from supervisors.
  • Verified copies of the official bachelor diploma and master's diploma and transcripts of exams.
  • Completed TEK PhD form for calculation grade point average. Upload in one of the fields called “Publication”. 
  • An official document describing the grading scheme of the awarding universities (if not Danish). Upload in one of the fields called “Publication”. 
  • An official and verified written assessment of the thesis or dissertation project from the grade giving institution, if the thesis/examination project is evaluated by approved/passed. The statement must clearly state that the candidate has been among the top 30 pct. in the graduation class for the study programme.
  • References, if any. You're welcome to use the form for reference letter at the Faculty website.
  • List of publications and maximum 2 examples of relevant publications, in case you have any publications.
