Ph.D. scholarship in experimental and computational physics - structure and dynamics of ionic liquids

Department of Science and Environment, Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as Ph.D. student of Physics from August 1 or soon thereafter. The position is for a period of three years.

Description of the Ph.D. project
The project focuses on detailed structural studies on ionic liquids at the atomic scale and how structure couples to the dynamics. Ionic liquids are salts that are liquid at room temperature and they have a great potential as electrolytes in lithium batteries, because there are inflammable unlike the electrolytes in use today. The project will focus particularly on the role of lithium ions on structure and dynamics and will help establish the fundamental scientific understanding that is the perquisite for bringing ionic liquids into use in batteries. The main techniques used in the project will be liquid diffraction, neutron total scattering, and inelastic neutron scattering combined with computer simulations.

The PhD project is part of the ESS Lighthouse SMART – Structure of Materials in Real Time. The main supervisor will be Professor Kristine Niss and the student will be co-supervised by Associate Professor Dorthe Ravnsbæk from University of Southern Denmark. The student will also be part of the Glass and Time center (www.glass.ruc.dk) at Roskilde University’s Department of Science and Environment. Glass and Time is characterized by strong collaboration between experiment, simulation, and theory.

The student will be trained in neutron scattering and computational methods associated with the study of liquids and solids.

Qualifications
The following qualifications are required:

  • Master’s degree in physics or a related field
  • Strong mathematical skills
  • Basic knowledge of chemistry
  • Experience with experimental work or computer simulations

We are looking for an ambitious, curious and open-minded person. You are expected to possess good communication skills and to be a visible, involved participant in the department’s daily activities.

Assessment
In the formal assessment regarding employment consideration will be given to;
