General Summary

This position is responsible for the development and execution of an operations strategy for the Madison Health & Nutrition (H&N) production site, insuring a high level of maintenance and logistics support to non-microbial operations in Madison and alignment with local and global initiatives and supporting selected Global Operations projects.

Principal Duties And Responsibilities 

I. Local responsibilities:

  • Be the leader and figure head of the Madison Operations organization within H&N, ensuring collaboration and customer focus.
  • Ensure that a “One Plant Many Locations” mindset is lived and acted on within the sites, every day and long term.
  • Ensure performance within budget requirements and demonstrate continuous scalability year over year. Promote and drive continuous improvement in the Madison Operations supply chain for all value chains within the microbial platform. This includes LEAN, efficiencies, productivity, yields, quality as well as ensuring that products meet customer requirements and business needs.
  • Ensure that the employees within responsibility area are aligned with our “Let’s Build a Better World. Naturally.” strategy, policies, business initiatives and modern leadership principles. Carry out management responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.
  • Drive performance-oriented mindset working towards objectives. Ensure motivation and retention of key personnel.
  • Develop key individuals through close, motivating leadership style. Build effective teams. Work with Human Resources to develop and implement talent development initiatives that match the long-term business strategy.
  • Be the overall responsible for the Health and Safety in the Madison production site.
  • Drive employee relations and employee engagement in the Madison production site.
  • Support teams and processes to effectively manage working capital, plan and schedule products and manage inventory.
  • Own the Madison site Master Plan and investments. Work with all business areas to update it annually and maintain a 5-year planning horizon. Drive interactions with engineering to appropriately implement capital expenditures that are tied to business strategy.
  • Ensure continuous certification and improvement of quality programs such as ISO, FAMI-QS, FSSC, GMP and HAACP.
  • II. Responsibilities within Chr. Hansen Global Operations setup

  • Be a member of and proactively contribute to the Americas Operations Leadership Team.
  • Ensure global best practices are mutually shared between sites through global projects and other collaboration.
  • Ensure local team is actively engaged in global networks such as Asset Care, Process Management, and Quality Management.
  • Work closely with sales, marketing, and product management to align operational activities with their strategic initiatives. Develop new ideas for processes and products that will add value for Chr. Hansen and our customers.
  • Ensures active participation in local and global Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • These characteristics are normally acquired through a Bachelor’s degree within engineering or science (preferred), or within business. Master’s degree preferred.
  • 8-12 years of leadership experience within a production/supply chain environment. Ideally this experience is acquired in food or process industry.
  • Strong and proven people/team leadership skills. Ability to work effectively in a team environment and to lead and motivate a team of managers. Skilled in facilitation and coaching methods to achieve results through others.
  • Experience leading more than one facility and/or functional area preferred.
  • Must possess a strong understanding of GMP, manufacturing systems and processes, engineering, continuous improvement and quality systems requirements and can deploy resources to produce the required solutions. 
  • Ability to make administrative, procedural or employment-related decisions in a dynamic environment.
  • Ability to effectively and succinctly communicate in oral and written form to all levels (operator to executive) of the organization as well as outside contractors.
  • Possess proficient knowledge of the manufacturing process and good business acumen. Proven track record of driving demonstrative, measurable, positive change and meeting challenging objectives. 
  • Possess a high level of project management skills.
  • Knowledge in operating relevant IT programs and systems.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English.
  • Working Conditions

    Working environment is generally favorable. Lighting, temperature and noise levels are adequate with occasional exposure to cold temperatures. Regular entry into the production facility requires personal protective equipment to be worn at all times. This includes a lab coat, hair/beard net, safety glasses, and gloves. Domestic and international travel is required up to 10% of the time.

    Physical Demands

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk, hear, use hands to finger, handle or touch objects, keyboard and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs. Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, or crouch. Specific vision abilities required by this job include vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
