Post doc in bat echolocation

The Department of Biology, Aarhus University, invites applications for a 2 year postdoc position offering applicants an exciting opportunity to join a new research project on bat echolocation studied with onboard archival tags.

Starting Date and Period
The position is for 2 years and is available from 1 September 2020 or as soon as possible hereafter.

Job description
The applicant is expected to drive an independent research thrust towards an understanding of how bats use echolocation to hunt and navigate in the wild.
You are expected to take the lead on calibrating and using state-of-the-art archival sound recording tags during field work around the world. It is expected that the applicant is responsible for collecting and analyzing data and disseminating the results in peer-reviewed journals and at conferences.
The applicant is expected to mentor younger students and participate in relevant teaching at Aarhus university.

Your profile
Applicants should hold a PhD in aerial bioacoustics or a closely related field, and have experience with

  • Capture and handling of wild bats in various field settings
  • Discrete time series analysis of sound and inertial sensor data
  • Acoustic calibration of equipment
  • Programming in Matlab or similar software
We are also looking for good interpersonal skills with attention to teamwork and collegial conduct in a multicultural work setting. The applicant must speak and write English at an advanced level.

The marine bioacoustics lab ( is a world leading research laboratory studying how animals forage and communicate with sound. We use recording arrays and acoustic tags to study how bats and toothed whales echolocate to find food and navigate.

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants, including the main considerations emphasized during the selection process.

Formalities and salary range
Natural Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
