Post doc position in Analytical method development for in situ small scale studies of carbon and nitrogen cycling in legume rhizospheres

The Department of Agroecology at Aarhus University in Foulum, Denmark, is offering a Postdoctoral position in the development of advanced analytical methods for small scale studies of carbon and nitrogen cycling in legume rhizospheres, starting 1st of January 2021. The successful candidate will be based at the Climate and Water Section, Department of Agroecology, Aarhus University, Foulum.

The position is available for a 3-year period. The successful candidate will work on the project “Stable or fertile – solving the soil C-N dilemma by exploiting the legume rhizosphere” funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark – Technology and Production Sciences as well as related projects. The overall aim of the postdoc position is to carry out method development using advanced analytical methods for small scale (time and space) of rhizosphere C and N cycling processes and study the fate of root derived organic molecules in the plant-soil-microbial system by advanced use of isotopes and biomarkers. We expect you to publish your research in relevant peer-reviewed international journals.

Qualifications:
We are searching for a highly motivated candidate who has:

  • A PhD in analytical chemistry applied in biological ecosystems, agroecology, agronomy, applied biology or similar related to studies of plantsoil-microbial chemical interactions,
  • Experience in detailed studies of plantsoil C and N cycling,
  • Experience in the use of mass spectrometry based analytical tools,
  • Experience with isotopebased methods for plant-soil C and N cycling studies,
  • Experience with analysis, identification and use of plant and microbial biomarkers,
  • Documented ability to write scientific papers,
  • Good skills in statistical analysis (preferably using ‘R’)
  • Good collaborative and social skills, and the ability to constructively work within a team structure.

Work environment:
The Climate and Water Section aims to increase knowledge about how agriculture can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, adapt to changing climatic conditions and ensure the sustainability of agricultural production.

The focus is on agricultural emissions of methane and nitrous oxide, soil carbon and nitrogen balances and agrohydrology. The section also deals with the possibilities for increasing the production of biomass for energy and other purposes while maintaining food production.

You will be an integrated part of a group of leading scientists involved in interdisciplinary agroecological research collaborations both nationally and internationally. Mentor will be senior researcher Jim Rasmussen (Jim.Rasmussen@agro.au.dk), Department of Agroecology, Aarhus University. You can read more about the Department of Agroecology at http://agro.au.dk/en/.

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Letter of reference
If you want a referee to upload a letter of reference on your behalf, please state the referee’s contact information when you submit your application. We strongly recommend that you make an agreement with the person in ques-tion before you enter the referee’s contact information, and that you ensure that the referee has enough time to write the letter of reference before the application deadline.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to ensure that letters of reference received after the application deadline will be taken into consideration.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Guidelines for applicants can be found here.

Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Further information on qualification requirements and job content may be found in the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at Danish Universities.

Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.

All interested candidates are encouraged to apply, regardless of their personal background. Research activities will be evaluated in relation to actual research time. Thus, we encourage applicants to specify periods of leave without research activities, in order to be able to subtract these periods from the span of the scientific career during the evaluation of scientific productivity.
