Post Doc position in the area of cross-sector collaboration, with a specific focus on business-humanitarian partnerships

The Post Doc is a non-tenured position which entails both research and teaching activities. The position is connected to the project ‘Private-sector Engagement in Humanitarian Action’ (HUMAC), led by Associate Professor Jasper Hotho and Assistant Professor Verena Girschik.

The HUMAC project examines how business-humanitarian collaboration can be organized in an ethical, effective, and sustainable manner. To this end, the project team - consisting of the principal investigators, a Post Doc and a PhD student - examines the challenges of business-humanitarian collaboration in a variety of crisis contexts. The aim is to generate urgently needed research-based knowledge and theoretical insights into the organizational dynamics, complications, and solutions of business-humanitarian collaboration in crisis contexts. The project is funded by the Velux Foundation, and will commence in November 2020. Additional information on the project can be found here.

The Post Doc position is focused on the legitimacy concerns towards private-sector engagement in humanitarian action. Humanitarian organizations increasingly collaborate with global firms, and various platforms have been created to facilitate such collaborations, such as the UN Connecting Business Initiative. However, the humanitarian community has traditionally viewed private-sector firms with considerable skepticism. In collaboration with the project team, the Post Doc will be asked to examine whether and how such legitimacy concerns may best be addressed for constructive collaboration in the context of global initiatives for emergency relief.

Interested applicants are encouraged to include a brief research statement with their application package, describing how they envision addressing this question in ways that build on their own research strengths. The Post Doc will work in close collaboration with the rest of the project team and will be eligible for considerable financial support for field work and data collection.

The Post Doc is a three-year position with a 33% teaching load. The Post Doc will be affiliated with the Department of International Economics, Government and Business (EGB) at CBS. Details about the department can be found here.
