Post doctoral fellow in development of lignin nanoparticles for protein capture

We are looking for a highly motivated and talented researcher for a 2-year postdoc position to start November 1st 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position will be associated with the project “New lignin-based nanomaterials for environmental friendly recovery of protein and peptides in agro-feed and food industry” funded by a grant from the Danish Research Council for Independent Research.

Research project

The project is part of ongoing activities related to biorefining of green biomass. In this concept, proteins from green biomasses, e.g. grass, clover or alfalfa, is extracted and recovered to produce a protein concentrate for feed or food applications. The aim of this project is to develop a novel method utilizing renewable and low cost lignin-based nanomaterials to recover proteins and peptides from industrial process streams with high efficiency. Lignin and lignosulfonates can naturally function as flocculent or absorbent of protein and peptides. The work in this project is to do defined modifications of lignins and/or lignosulfonates in order to generate novel lignin-based nanomaterials with functionalities that improves the interaction with the proteins/peptides of interest and facilitates easy and efficient recovery from industrial process streams. This research will also involve characterization of the produced nanomaterials and studying their interaction with proteins/peptides.

Qualifications

The preferred applicant should have an excellent academic track record, solid research experience and be highly motivated to deploy diverse experimental and analytical strategies. We expect the ideal candidate to:

  • holds a Ph.D. in chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology or a related field
  • has good communication skills in English, both oral and written
  • is ambitious, creative, independent and self-driven
Hands on skills and expert knowledge in one or more of the following areas will be an advantage:

  • Lignin chemistry
  • Enzyme technology, particularly enzymes active on lignin
  • Material or polymer science
  • Colloidal science

Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences at University of Copenhagen conducts education and research in the fields of plant biotech, agriculture and environment - from molecules through organisms to populations and anthropogenic ecosystems. The Plant and Soil Science Section embraces research groups in plant breeding, plant nutrition and soil fertility. Spanning molecule to ecosystem level, the activities within the Section focus on plant-environment interactions and soil processes, which are fundamental drivers for development of future systems for sustainable production of food and biomaterials. Part of the section deals with use of biomass in various biorefinery concepts. This includes biochemical conversion of e.g. straw into bioethanol or extraction of proteins from green biomasses. Essential to this is research to get better understanding of the plant cell wall, interactions between plant cell wall components and to exploit these components for biorefining purposes.

Terms of employment

The position is covered by the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff.

Terms of appointment and payment accord to the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations on Academics in the State.

The starting salary is currently up to DKK 430.569 including annual supplement (+ pension up to DKK 73.627). Negotiation for salary supplement is possible.
