Postdoc in Chemical Development of Green Solid-Phase Peptide Synthesis

As part of Novo Nordisk’s R&D family, CMC Development makes a real difference for patients with chronic diseases across the world. We develop, manufacture and distribute drug candidates for non-clinical and clinical trials with the help from approximately 1400 CMC employees. We develop and formulate all new peptide and protein processes, coming out of our research unit and ensure the best-in-class treatments for patients.
CMC Development is organised in six areas of expertise supporting the entire drug development pipeline. The present position is situated in the CMC API Development area.

CMC API Development is responsible for developing, upscaling and documenting fermentation, purification and chemical processes for API production in order to bring the growing pipeline of new drug candidates into clinical trials.

The position
As part of Novo Nordisk’s continued commitment to the reduction of our environmental foot-print, we are seeking an ambitious post-doctoral candidate for the development of new methodologies for GSPPS.

The postdoc project's aim is to develop new and sustainable methods for GSPPS by a) reducing the consumption of problematic substances, or b) substituting problematic substances by greener alternatives. To this end, the successful candidate will utilise computational methods such as machine learning algorithms and Design of Experiment (DoE) to plan laboratory experiments with the aim of screening reagents, solvents and conditions for the greening of current SPPS protocols. The laboratory work will involve hands-on peptide synthesis (SPPS) with state-of-the-art fully automated SPPS instruments as well as large-scale semi-automated SPPS equipment. In addition to purity and yield, physico-chemical parameters and reaction kinetics will be evaluated systematically by a wide range of analytical techniques, including HPLC, MS and NMR etc. Finally, the successful candidate will utilise a variety of isolation and purification techniques such as RP-HPLC, AEC.

The successful applicant will be integrated in the Chemical Process Development department within CMC API Development.

The position is of two years duration.

Qualifications
You hold a PhD in peptide chemistry with at least one year post-doctoral (or equivalent) experience within peptide chemistry. The candidate is expected to have significant international research experience.

The right candidate will have extensive experience with manual and automated solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) and an in-depth theoretical knowledge of state-of-the-art SPPS. Moreover, a strong background in analytical HPLC, MS and NMR techniques and experience with purification and isolation of peptides is essential. Laboratory experiments will be guided by computational methods such as machine learning algorithms and DoE.

Thus, experience with basic programming and an interest in applying computational methods to chemical development and optimisation would be an advantage.

On a personal level, you have excellent written and oral English communication skills and a strong track record of publications within the peptide chemistry field. For non-native English speakers you will ideally be able to provide documentation for your English proficiency (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS or similar). You have the ability to perform tasks independently with strong commitment to high quality data and documentation. At the same time, you have an innovative and positive mind-set and thrive in a dynamic research environment where daily collaboration with multiple stakeholders is essential.
