Postdoc in Communications for Cooperative Unmanned Aerial Vehicles

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Aarhus University, invites applicants for a postdoc position offering applicants an exciting opportunity to join a new European research project. The position is open for 18 months with a possibility for further extension.

The position is available from 1 April 2021 or as soon as possible hereafter.

Job description/research project/research areaInspection of critical infrastructure such as bridges and railway systems have been a cumbersome and costly process for decades. The inspection process incurs not only operational expenditures but also human capital risks. With the invent of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), the inspection operations can soon be efficiently deployed by highly scalable cooperating autonomous systems (also known as swarms) under a remote operator supervision. However, the limited endurance, moderate computing power as well as the imperfect sensing and communication capabilities of the system can be circumvented by organizing multiple UAVs into groups using swarm coordination algorithms. This allows UAV swarms to perform tasks that are scalable in a robust manner potentially bringing enhanced safety, reduced cost, and a faster inspection mission completion time.

The offered postdoctoral project aims to provide the theoretical and innovative foundation for networks of autonomous UAVs to determine efficient cooperation strategies that permit inspection operations in complex environments under non-ideal conditions such as imperfect communication and imperfect sensory inputs. It is vital for the success of the inspection mission to provide a cooperative path planning optimization of UAVs to fully exploit the quality of service needed. The project aims to research in algorithms to cope with the high complexity of the inspection environment as well as to find ways to cope with imperfect of sensory inputs and unreliable communication.

The offered postdoc position will give you the opportunity to develop your research and your career profile together with a highly dedicated and dynamic team of young researchers in an international setting that includes collaboration with international partners in Europe. You will be offered the chance to get experience with teaching and co-supervision.

Your profileThe desired candidate should hold a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or similar. Applicants who have submitted or will submit their PhD dissertation before the starting date for the position are welcome to apply.

Required qualifications:

  • Strong analytical skills
  • Good experience with mathematical optimization and modeling
  • Programming experience in preferably Python and/or C++
  • Experiences with Linux, wireless communication and networking
  • Good experience with scientific publication
  • Strong team player
  • Excellent English skills both oral and in writing

Deadline: 28 February 2021

Application procedureShortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Letter of referenceIf you want a referee to upload a letter of reference on your behalf, please state the referee’s contact information when you submit your application. We strongly recommend that you make an agreement with the person in question before you enter the referee’s contact information, and that you ensure that the referee has enough time to write the letter of reference before the application deadline.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to ensure that letters of reference received after the application deadline will be taken into consideration.

Formalities and salary range
Technical Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Guidelines for applicants can be found here.

Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Further information on qualification requirements and job content may be found in the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at Danish Universities.

Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.

All interested candidates are encouraged to apply, regardless of their personal background. Research activities will be evaluated in relation to actual research time. Thus, we encourage applicants to specify periods of leave without research activities, in order to be able to subtract these periods from the span of the scientific career during the evaluation of scientific productivity.
