Postdoc in Economic valuation of biodiversity non-use values

The Department of Food and Resource Economics at University of Copenhagen is looking for a highly motivated researcher to work on an interdisciplinary research project at the intersection between economics and biodiversity. The overall aim for the postdoc is to develop improved approaches for obtaining theoretically valid and policy-relevant monetary estimates of non-use values of biodiversity, ultimately facilitating better incorporation of biodiversity values in future economic analysis. Faced with a global biodiversity crisis, the importance of appropriately accounting for biodiversity values in economic analysis is becoming increasingly important at all levels of policy- and decision-making. However, due to methodological validity concerns non-use values of biodiversity are today commonly omitted from the economic analysis that guide environmental policy- and decision-makers. The postdoc will work on empirical and theoretical research questions to address exactly this concern.

Job description
The postdoc’s duties will include research within economic valuation of biodiversity, particularly focused on measuring and assessing non-use values with the purpose of applying monetary value estimates in policy evaluations as well as green national accounting. In particular, the postdoc will engage in a research project on testing the use of biodiversity indices for obtaining more valid welfare economic estimates of non-use values. The project is a 3-year project funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark. Furthermore, the postdoc’s duties will include teaching as well as participation in other related projects. The position may also include performance of other duties. The position is located in the section for Environment and Natural Resources, where the postdoc will join one of the strongest research groups in Europe working with economic valuation of nature and ecosystem services.

Profile
You should ideally either have a PhD in biology or ecology with a profound interest in and insight into the welfare economics of biodiversity, or have a PhD in applied economics or environmental economics with a profound interest in and insight into biodiversity, or a PhD in a similarly relevant topic. You should have experience with one or more of the following:

  • Quantification, measurement or aggregation of biodiversity at varying geo-spatial levels
  • Economic valuation methods based on stated preferences, preferably choice modelling techniques
  • Applied Cost-Benefit Analysis or natural capital accounting
Furthermore, it will be an advantage if you have:

  • Experience with interdisciplinary research collaboration
  • The ability to work independently as well as in teams
  • A profound interest in bringing your research results into applied policy- and decision-making contexts
  • Good communication and language skills in both English and Danish
