Postdoc in In vitro and in vivo toxicity testing of wastewater

The Environmental Toxicology Group, Section of Environmental Chemistry and Physics is looking for a postdoc for at least three years of employment. The place of employment will be at Campus Frederiksberg in central Copenhagen, but shorter stays of up to six months in total at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) will be part of the employment. The Environmental Toxicology Group aim at understanding the dynamics of toxic effects both over time and between different endpoints on an organismal scale, and we have a strong experience with quantification of mixture toxicity and multiple stressors (https://plen.ku.dk/english/research/env_chem_phys/et/). At SLU the research group of Johan Lundqvist (https://www.slu.se/institutioner/biomedicin-veterinar-folkhalsovetenskap/forskning/toxikologi/molecular-toxicology/) , at the Department of Biomedicine and Veterinary Public Health, has a strong facility for in vitro toxicity screening, which is used to identify compounds of toxicological concern in environmental samples.

Your responsibilities:

There is a large knowledge-gap regarding which chemicals that are causing toxicity in the aquatic environment. For some toxicity endpoints, as little as 1% of the observed toxic effects can be explained by well-known chemicals. The Vandalf project aims to reduce this knowledge-gap and increase our understanding of which chemicals cause toxicity in the environment. The postdoc will be responsible for toxicological fingerprinting and toxicity evaluation of targeted compounds in the Vandalf project (https://plen.ku.dk/english/research/env_chem_phys/ac/research-projects/vandalf/). This includes being responsible for the toxicological screening of the complex wastewater samples prepared by the analytical chemists in in vivo tests on algae, daphnids and nematode (reproduction) conducted at UCPH (or in contract labs), and collect and interpret the in vitro test results conducted at SLU on the same samples. In addition, the joint toxicity of the identified and quantified chemicals of each sample should be estimated using database values for single chemical toxicity. The data will be combined with the chemical fingerprints of the samples, and data will be processed using advanced chemometrical methods with the aim of developing a virtual effect-directed analysis for identifying compounds contributing to risk. The postdoc will work closely together with the analytical chemists and chemometricians involved in Vandalf. The applicant should have an interest in being part of developing the tools of the future to identify the compounds that contribute to risk of complex polluted water. The aim is that monitoring, remediation and regulation of chemicals in the future can focus on the largest contributors to risk rather than the pre-defined chemicals defining the basis for present day monitoring and regulation.

The postdoc’s duties will include research within the section as well as teaching. The post may also include performance of other duties.

Your qualifications:

The successful applicant should have:

  • A PhD-degree within the field of environmental toxicology.
  • Experience with conducting either in vitro or in vivo toxicity tests
  • Experience with data treatment of toxicity data
  • Experience with mixture toxicity models and predictions using the toxic unit principle
  • Knowledge of and experience with effect-directed analysis, high throughput toxicity tests and use of toxicological databases is an advantage
  • Knowledge of and interest in sampling, sample preparations, analytical techniques and chemometric data analysis is an advantage
  • Teaching experience and -enthusiasm
