Postdoc in Investigating Circular DNA as Novel Cancer Biomarkers

The Department of Biomedicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as Postdoc in the field of cancer biomarker development based on extrachromosomal circular DNA as per 15 March 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a fixed-term full-time position (1 year) with possibility of extension.

At the Department of Biomedicine, we offer a vibrant international and multidisciplinary research environment where English is the preferred language in the laboratory, at meetings and at seminars. The Department of Biomedicine employs some 450 people and covers a range of research areas within Biomedicine. We contribute to the Bachelor’s degree programs in medicine, molecular medicine, odontology and the Master’s degree programs in biomedical engineering and medical chemistry. The Steno Diabetes Center is acknowledged as a pioneer in leading the Danish Diabetes research and treatment. And the SDCA is created with a vision to create a new platform in the region to further strengthen the longstanding novel ideas and concepts in diabetes research and treatment. Our infrastructure in the Biomedicine Department and SDCA is well developed with modern laboratories, core and animal facilities. About the research project
We are a research group working with both biotechnology development and applications in biomedicine. Examples include the CRISPR technology, CRISPR-assisted high-throughput screening, single cell sequencing technology, stem cell engineering and animal biotechnology. We systematically combine these technologies to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying diseases, as well identifying novel biomarkers for better disease diagnosis and treatment. More detail introduction to the research can be found in our group website www.dream.au.dk. This postdoc project is funded by the Horizon 2020 FET OPEN. Extrachromosomal circular DNA, known as eccDNA, has become an important marker for cancer diagnosis and treatment. Previously, we have discovered that targeted eccDNAs can be generated by CRISPR in human cells (NAR. 46(22):e131.). The aim of this postdoc project is to establish eccDNA as novel biomarkers for cancer diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. Apart from the CRISPR eccDNA project, the postdoctoral research candidate is expected to participate in several other research projects in the group, including generation of genetically modified pigs for organ transplantation, CRISPR-assisted genetic screening for drugable genes and CRISPR data science. We are looking for candidates will strong background in molecular and cell biology and cancer genetics.

Your job responsibilities
As Postdoc in the Department of Biomedicine, your position is primarily research-based but may also involve teaching assignments. You will contribute to the development of the department through research of high international quality. In your daily work, you will work closely with colleagues on your project, where you will receive supervision and guidance.
Your main tasks will consist of:

  • Develop new CRISPR editing tool for eccDNA application purpose
  • Conduct plasmid and lentiviral-based CRISPR gene editing in human and pig cells
  • Generate eccDNA biosensor cells for a few oncogenes in cancer cell lines
  • Generate a panel of CRISPRs for creating different eccDNA species
  • Investigate the functional association between eccDNA with oncogene amplification and drug resistant
  • Generation of genetically modified pig fibroblasts for organ transplantation purpose
  • Actively Involve in project application and scientific writing
  • Assist supervision of PhDs and other students
  • Involve in teaching
You will report to the Associate Professor Yonglun Luo.

Your competences
You have academic qualifications equal to PhD level, preferably within one or more of the following areas molecular and cellular biology, genetic engineering, biotechnology.
As a person, you are ambitious, take ownership and possess good communication and interpersonal skills. We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English.
