Postdoc in social epidemiology

The Department of Clinical Epidemiology at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University and The Section of Social Medicine at Department of Public Health at University of Copenhagen invite applications for a position as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the field of Social Epidemiology. The position would start 1 December 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter, and is a two-year full-time position.

The appointment will be at The Department of Clinical Epidemiology at Aarhus University.

About the research project
The project involves analyzing large Danish register data to examine the effects of neighborhood deprivation on dementia and its vascular risk factors among a cohort of immigrants to Denmark. The project emphasizes policy evaluation, social determinants, and research methods leveraging natural experiments.

The project is a collaboration between The Department of Clinical Epidemiology, Aarhus University, The Section of Social Medicine, University of Copenhagen, and the Social Policies for Health Equity Research Program at University of California San Francisco (https://sphere.ucsf.edu).

Your job responsibilities
As Postdoc, the position is primarily research-based but may also involve teaching assignments.

In daily work, the Postdoc will work closely with colleagues on the project, both in Denmark and in the US. He/she will receive supervision and guidance from the principal investigator and other colleagues. The main tasks will consist of:

  • Research in social epidemiology, specifically about neighbourhood deprivation and health.
  • Conduct independent statistical analysis using data from Danish population-based and medical registries, and draft high-quality manuscripts for publication.
  • Collaborate with national and international collaborators.
  • Develop an independent research agenda and prepare grant applications to establish research independence.
  • Contribute to teaching at the Aarhus University Faculty of Health Sciences or at Department of Public Health, University of Copenhagen.

The composition of the tasks may vary according to the department’s research priorities but will ensure that the Postdoc will gain further qualifications within research. The position is financed externally and assignments will be determined in collaboration with University of California San Francisco.

Your competencies
The successful candidate will have academic qualifications at PhD level or equivalent, preferably within one or more of the following areas: epidemiology, public health, health policy, economics, sociology. Prior experience with carrying out data analysis is required, including regression analysis ideally with longitudinal or multi-level data. Research experience in social determinants of health, health disparities, or immigrant health is desirable. Research experience analyzing and incorporating data from Danish (or other) registries would be useful, particularly data incorporating socioeconomic or health data.

On a personal level, a successful candidate will be ambitious, take ownership, and possess good communication and interpersonal skills. We expect the Postdoc to be fluent in oral and written English.

An applicant who can document the following competences will be preferred:
  • Experience with research in social epidemiology
  • Experience in collaborating with other research groups
  • Strong analytical and writing skills
  • Methodological expertise in longitudinal data analysis
  • Ability to program statistical analyses using SAS, Stata, R or equivalent
  • Publication record in peer-reviewed scientific journals and experience presenting research findings at international conferences
  • Ability to work independently, be responsible, and be capable of planning one’s own work
