Postdoc posiition in Art History

The Department of Arts and Cultural Studies, Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen (UCPH), Denmark, invites applications for an eighteen-month postdoctoral position in art history to be filled by September 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position is part of the research project Feminist Emergency: Women Artists in Denmark, 1960-Present, led by Assistant Professor Kerry Greaves and funded by Novo Nordisk Foundation. Position starting date: 1 September 2021.

This is an unique opportunity to join an innovative research project, which considers the contribution and culturally specific conditions of women artists and feminist art in Denmark over the last sixty years in light of today’s diversified and globalized art world, where gender and identity are increasingly politicized but only selectively scrutinized in terms of feminist theory.

Despite rising global challenges, in Danish art history feminism continues to be taken for granted as an already completed project. Yet as recent studies decrying the continued lack of gender parity in museums and exhibitions reflect, feminism is needed now more than ever. The project posits feminism as an analytical tool, or a way of challenging and infiltrating given structures and forms of representation. It poses and seeks to answer the questions: If there are more women artists with ever more opportunities working in Denmark today, then why are they still so grossly underrepresented in museum collections, exhibitions, and art historical studies? What does it mean to be a woman artist or an artist creating feminist art in Denmark over the last sixty years and what can this tell us about the conditions of Danish culture within a globalized context? Finally, what can a study of women artists in such a seemingly liberal environment as Denmark productively lend to international feminist art theory? The aim is to collect empirical information, produce new research, create new art historical networks, and contribute substantially to international art history through the Danish case.

The project runs from 2020-2024 and involves the maintaining of a substantial English-language web site; creation of a collaborative international research network with related workshops and symposia; research stays and conference presentations, and publications, including a major anthology.

Qualifications and Job Description
The chosen candidate will work closely with PI Kerry Greaves and is expected to actively participate in and contribute to the project and its related activities.
