Postdoc position: Environmental controls of nitrous oxide emission from soil

The Department of Agroecology invites applications for a postdoc position to support ongoing research on nitrous oxide emissions from agroecosystems.

Background
Nitrous oxide emissions contribute significantly to the carbon footprint of agriculture, and ongoing research projects aim to document emissions and effects of mitigation strategies. Soil properties and climate interact with management practices in regulating nitrous oxide emissions, and robust predictions therefore require a detailed understanding of biotic and abiotic controls. Quantifying emissions at the field scale is an integrated part of MRV (Monitoring, Reporting and Verification) efforts, but also a reference for hypotheses to be investigated in controlled laboratory experiments.

Starting date and period
The position is for 3 years and is available from 1 September 2021 or as soon as possible hereafter.

Work content
The successful candidate must take part in planning and conducting new field studies, as well as analysing and publishing the results of ongoing experiments to document emissions from cropping systems and individual nitrogen sources, as well as effects of management and mitigation strategies. Funding sources include national climate research programs, as well as European projects.
Management strategies of special interest include the use of catch crops to avoid environmental losses, the recyling of livestock manure for crop production, and adoption of conservation tillage to enhance soil fertility and biodiversity. These strategies all have implications for nitrous oxide emissions associated with organic matter recycling. The role of carbon turnover as driver of nitrous oxide emissions is investigated using a variety of methods to describe microbial population dynamics and activity in gradient environments around organic hotspots, including microsensors, molecular tools and isotope analyses.

Your profile
In filling this position, the following qualifications will be requested:

  • A research background within microbial ecology of carbon and nitrogen cycling in soil;
  • Experience with the organisation of field and laboratory experiments, and project management;
  • Handson experience with the use of isotopes to study C and N cycling;
  • R programming skills and experience with statistical analyses;
  • Proven ability to publish at a high international level.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the daily management of research projects in coordination with other members of the individual projects, and will be actively involved in the training and co-supervision of other staff members and students.

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. All applicants will be notified whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Formalities and salary range
Technical Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
