Postdoc position in Escherichia coli membrane biology at the Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen

We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic researcher for a one-year postdoctoral fellowship (with the possibility of a one-year extension) available from the 1st of February 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter at the Department of Biology, Functional Genomics, at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark.

The fellowship is funded by the Villum Experiment 2020 Grant, “Insane in the membrane; how to avoid crowding of the Escherichia coli inner membrane?”. The project will take place at the excellent research environment of the Department of Biology, Functional Genomics at the Copenhagen Biocenter.

The project is a collaboration between Jakob Frimodt-Møller and Prof. Anders Løbner-Olesen taking place in the laboratory of Prof. Anders Løbner-Olesen at the Dept. of Biology, University of Copenhagen. One focus area of the laboratory is understating how antimicrobial compounds enters gram-negative bacteria, how the bacteria confers resistance to these, and what how the antimicrobial compounds can be optimized to overcome the found resistance mechanism. Another unrelated but long-standing focus of the laboratory is in bacterial chromosomal replication and the regulation of this.

Project description

E. coli is one of - if not - the most well studied organism on earth; however, it keeps coming up with surprises. Recently, we added to this by observing loss of viability to ex. aminoglycosides if the inner membrane (IM) was crowded with proteins. Thus, E. coli possess the ability to avoid crowding of the IM without compromising its function in uptake of metabolites, efflux of toxins, and its essential role in envelope integrity. We will study this ability of E. coli to avoid crowding from multiple different angels to cover everything from IM protein composition to changes in fluidity. This will add to our basic understanding of E. coli, influence several biological fields, and provide a blueprint for investigating this phenome in higher organism.

Job description

The postdoc’s duties will include research as well as teaching. The post may also include performance of other duties.

Your key tasks as a post.doc. in the project is:

  • To manage and carry through your research project
  • Write scientific papers and co-author papers with other project participants
  • Dissemination of your results at international meetings and possibly via teaching
Candidates with expertise in membrane biology, molecular biology and/or genetics will be preferred. Excellent written and spoken English is a requirement for the position. The candidates should document a track record of scientific publications, and have the ability and desire to work autonomously as well as in a team.
