Postdoc Researcher to the ERC project "Explaining Transnational Jihad" (re-announcement)

DIIS invites applications for a temporary and project specific 2-year position as postdoc researcher starting on 1 October 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. The researcher will be part of the larger research project “Explaining Transnational Jihad – Patterns of Escalation and Containment” funded by the European Research Council.

The Project

The overall project that the postdoc researcher will be part of aims at advancing an understanding of how jihadist conflicts become transnational and under what circumstances they can be contained. The project also aims at developing an interdisciplinary analytical framework, which combines micro- and macro level approaches to jihadism, drawing from both Religious Studies, Security Studies and Peace & Conflict Studies. With its focus on macro-level conflict structures, the ambition is to develop a new framework for thinking about containment, providing an alternative to both the micro-level countering discourses embraced by much of the radicalization research, and the containment thinking that stems from the treatment of jihadist conflicts as civil wars in the peace and conflict literature.

The overall project has four main components 1) a quantitative examination of transnationalization processes drawing from among others the Religion and Armed Conflicts (RELAC) dataset/UCDP hosted by Uppsala University, 2) comparative case studies of the mechanisms of escalation and de-escalation of jihadist conflicts in Syria/Iraq, Yemen, Libya, Mali/Niger, Pakistan/Afghanistan focusing particularly on the movements of Islamic State, Al-Qaeda, the Taleban, and Boko Haram, 3) securitization analyses of the macro-level conflict structures that transnational jihadist movements tap into, and finally 4) sociotheological worldview analyses of potential changes in jihadist conflict imagery during transnationalization processes.

The applicant is particularly expected to contribute to component 2 and 4 with an emphasis on investigating the escalation and containment dynamics that relate to theological interpretations and religious worldviews. The applicant must have obtained a PhD degree in a relevant field – applicants with a background in theology, religious studies and/or Middle Eastern Studies as well as linguistic skills in Arabic will be preferred. Proficiency in written and oral English is required.

General Information

The position is aimed at applicants who have obtained their PhD within the past three years. An older degree may be acceptable under special circumstances (such as sick leave, parental leave or similar). Furthermore, the applicant must have demonstrated an ability to publish and communicate research in accordance with the Danish Code of Conduct for Research Integrity.

DIIS is a leading public institute for independent research DIIS is an independent public research institute. Researchers contribute to the ambition to be at the cutting edge of multi- and interdisciplinary research, policy analysis and communication on global affairs. The postdoc will be based at DIIS’ address in Nordhavn.

Our research The Toxicology and Drug Metabolism Group has great expertise in in vitro and in vivo research on the endocrine disrupting potential of pharmaceuticals and applies enzyme and cell based in vitro assays as well as in vivo assays and analytical tools such as HPLC-MSMS. Research related to this position will be performed in the Toxicology and Drug Metabolism Group under supervision of Assoc. More specific, we want to develop a microfluidic live-cell array, which can screen for the disrupting potency of drug enantiomers towards human steroidogenesis within very short time-frames and with low costs. Furthermore, this assay shall allow for a mechanistic evaluation of the endocrine toxicity of drugs. The work includes culturing of endocrine cells, design and fabrication of microfluidic lab-on-a-chip systems, miniaturization of the traditional H295R steroidogenesis assay, i.e., adaption and characterization of endocrine cells to and under microfluidic conditions, and application of the developed microfluidic assay to toxicity studies. Furthermore, quantification of drug compounds and steroid hormones with (chiral) HPLC-MSMS. This position includes (to a minor extent) teaching duties such as supervision of students and teaching in courses related to pharmaceutical sciences at bachelor and master levels. University of Copenhagen

The Department of Pharmacy at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, is looking for a highly motivated and dynamic researcher for a 15 month Postdoc position in the Toxicology and Drug Metabolism Group.

Our research
The Toxicology and Drug Metabolism Group has great expertise in in vitro and in vivo research on the endocrine disrupting potential of pharmaceuticals and applies enzyme and cell based in vitro assays as well as in vivo assays and analytical tools such as HPLC-MSMS. Research related to this position will be performed in the Toxicology and Drug Metabolism Group under supervision of Assoc. Prof. Andreas Kretschmann in collaboration with the Microscale Analytical Systems Group (Prof. Jörg P. Kutter). Information about the two research groups as well as the Department of Pharmacy can be found under http://pharmacy.ku.dk/research/ .

Your job

Research related to this position is highly interdisciplinary and is based at the intersection of in vitro endocrine toxicology, microfluidic technology, and (bio)analytical chemistry. It aims at the development of novel in vitro assays for toxicity screening of drug enantiomers.

The main responsibilities of the Postdoc are research, including publication/scientific communication of research results, as well as research-based teaching.

Profile
We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following competencies and experience:

Required qualifications:

  • Candidates should hold a PhD degree in an area related to the above mentioned research (e.g., in pharmaceutical sciences, biochemistry, bioengineering, mechanistic/ endocrine toxicology, (bio)analytical chemistry, or similar).
  • Calculated from the application deadline, no more than 4 years must have elapsed since you obtained your PhD. Leaves of absence such as maternity/paternity leave, illness or family care leave, leave for military service, humanitarian aid work, etc. will be taken into account.
  • Candidates who can document expertise and original scientific production in in vitro toxicology using cell based assays, microfluidic live-cell assays (e.g., organ on-a-chip devices) and/ or lab-on-a-chip technology are preferred. Furthermore, experience with analytical tools like (chiral) HPLC-MSMS is considered an advantage.
  • An excellent publication record is required.
  • Teaching qualifications are considered an advantage.
Place of employment
