Postdoc to design a novel total knee replacement to resolve instability issues

The research area of the postdoc position will be within orthopedic biomechanics and you will be part of the biomechanics research group. Your research will be within the project Total Knee Arthroplasty Implants Optimized for Post-operative Stability financed by the Independent Research Fund Denmark. The project is a collaborative effort between Aalborg University, Radboud University Medical Center, The Nederlands, University of Twente, The Nederlands and the companies AnyBody Technology A/S, Denmark and Orthosensor Inc, United States.

The research project:

Knee osteoarthritis is a frequently occurring joint disease that causes pain, joint deformity, reduced quality-of-life and walking disability. At advanced stages, joint replacement, so-called total knee arthroplasty (TKA), may be necessary. Although TKA is generally considered successful, 16-30% of patients are dissatisfied. There are multiple reasons for this, but some of the most frequent reasons for revision are instability and joint stiffness. A possible explanation for this is that the implant geometry is not optimized to ensure joint stability in the individual patient. This we wish to change in this project by developing a new patient-specific implant optimized to ensure knee stability and implement it using intraoperative sensors to ensure an optimized result. This methodology we will compare against traditional TKA to document that we obtain better post-operative knee stability.

Tasks and responsibilities:

The purpose of your PostDoc project is, therefore, to develop this novel TKA implant and compare its performance against traditional TKA in cadavers. To tailor the implant to the patient-specific biomechanics, you will create patient-specific musculoskeletal models based on pre-operative data, such as medical imaging and laxity measurements and optimize the implant geometry to obtain the desired knee biomechanics.

Limited teaching within the area can be expected, but also in other study programmes at the University.

Required qualifications:

  • You are a highly motivated candidate who is able to work in a small team and prepared to stay with other network partners for extended periods of time
  • You have scientific qualifications preferably at PhD–level within mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, robotics, or equivalent
  • You have experience in mechanical design, computational modelling and optimization
  • You have to be fluent in English both oral and written.
  • Desired qualifications:

  • You have experience with knee modelling
  • You have experience with implant design
  • You have experience with cadaver experiments
  • You have experience with additive manufacturing.

    Qualification requirements:  

    Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.
