Postdoc within numerical methods for interfacial flow simulations

Do you want to develop the next generation of accurate open source interfacial flow solvers? The Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Mathematical Sciences, offers a Postdoc position within numerical methods for interfacial flow simulations, starting 01 November 2020 or soon thereafter. The position will be based at Aalborg University’s campus in Copenhagen and will have a duration of 3 years.

Job description

The Postdoc is part of the research project “Numerical Methods for Interfacial Flows (InterFlow)” sponsored by Independent Research Fund Denmark and by the Department.

Project description:

The aim of the InterFlow project is to develop accurate and efficient numerical methods improving our ability to simulate fluid flows involving complex fluid interfaces. Such simulations are used extensively in engineering and science from prediction of extreme wave loads on offshore wind turbines and in the analysis of bubbly flows in chemical processing plants.

Tasks and responsibilities:

The postdoc will develop novel numerical methods for calculating the curvature of gas-liquid interfaces from the so-called volume fraction field on unstructured 3D finite volume meshes. Furthermore, the postdoc will develop novel approaches to consistently include the surface tension force in an interfacial flow solver by exploiting the so-called Integral Formulation described in (Popinet, 2018).

The developed numerical methods will be implemented as extension modules to the open source CFD software, OpenFOAM, and release as open source. The postdoc will become part of and actively engage in the global open source community around the OpenFOAM code.

The project also involves organisation of international workshops and collaboration with the Fluides Complexes et Instabilités Hydrodynamiques research group at Sorbonne Université in Paris, France. The position will also involve collaboration with other AAU departments and/or companies on specific engineering applications of the developed numerical methods. Here, emphasis will be on applications areas where our technology assists the transition to green energy.

Finally, the position will include some amount of teaching, mainly 1st year mathematics for engineering students. Teaching tasks may take place at any of the three Aalborg University campuses (Aalborg, Esbjerg, Copenhagen).

Your profile:  

As our new postdoc you should ideally have:

  • A PhD degree in mathematics, physics or similar, with a solid background within mathematics and fluid dynamics.
  • Experience with development of numerical methods and schemes for CFD.
  • Strong programming skills including experience with C++ and preferably with OpenFOAM coding.
  • Creativity, perseverance, team spirit and high personal integrity.
  • Excellent English communication skills, both spoken and written.
  • Note that the Independent Research Fund Denmark sponsoring the Postdoc requires the applicant’s PhD age to be at most 4 years at the application deadline (The PhD age is defined as the time elapsed from the date your PhD degree was officially awarded minus twice the number of actual held weeks of maternity/paternity leave after that date – see definition in section 4.3.5 here).

    Qualification requirements:  

    Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.
