Postdoctoral Fellowship in Biofilm Prevention by use of Probiotics, Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen

This Postdoc position is associated with “Embedding bacteria in implants to prevent infection - BioEmbed” – a Lundbeckfonden funded project that aims to develop and test a novel approach for embedding live probiotic bacteria into catheter silicone material and, thereby, reduce the attachment of pathogenic bacteria. Catheter associated urinary tract infections are common, and they are hard to treat due to the formation of bacterial biofilms on the catheter material, as biofilms are highly tolerant to antibiotics.

Probiotic bacteria inhibit the growth of pathogens and, in contrast to antibiotic treatment, do not select for antibiotic resistance development. The project will be conducted in collaboration with the Danish Biotech company, Biomodics ApS, specialized in medical devices and material modification. The appointed Postdoc will develop methods for probiotic embedment in catheter material and subsequently test viability and activity of embedded bacteria. Moreover, probiotic effects on the pathogenic community composition, biofilm formation and viability will be assessed.

Postdoc position is for 2 years and will be carried out at University of Copenhagen – Section of Microbiology, Department of Biology where you will engage in teamwork within the group, in addition to working with our industrial partner. The position is to be filled 1.5.2020 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Qualifications

We are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious researcher with strong experience in biofilm microbiology and microscopy. Applicants should have the following qualifications:

  • PhD in Microbiology, Bioengineering or equivalent
  • Hands on and documented experience with: Cultivation and analysis of bacteria, Confocal microscopy analysis of bacterial communities, use of in vitro biofilm models
  • Previous experience with biomaterials, genetic engineering and fluorescent staining of bacterial cells including FISH will be seen as an advantage
  • Fluency in English
Main tasks of the appointed applicant

  • Development of methodology for bacterial embedment in collaboration with Biomodics ApS
  • Assessments of viability and activity of embedded probiotics
  • Analysis of probiotic-pathogen interactions in biofilm models and in/on catheter material
