Postdoctoral Fellowship in Design and Application of Model for Studies of Bacterial Interactions

This Postdoc position is associated with “Printing nature to study nature - artificial 3D-leaves for ecologically relevant studies of bacterial biofilm communities - BioPrint” – a project funded by the Villum Foundation Experiment scheme that aims to 3D print artificial, degradable leaves serving as surface and substrate for model soil biofilms. The developed methodology will be used to unravel interspecies bacterial interactions in biofilms under ecologically relevant conditions, specifically aiming at identification of metabolic interactions and how these depend on the distance between bacteria.

The main objectives of BioPrint are based on the development of an ecologically relevant model based on 3D-printing and artificial soil for studies of interactions in multispecies biofilms. The model will subsequently be used for i) unravelling interspecies metabolic interactions involved in decomposition of organic material by metaproteomics analysis (including Protein Stable Isotope Probing, Protein-SIP) and ii) linking spatial organization (by bacterial cell printing) of biofilm bacteria to their metabolic interactions.

The Postdoc position is for 2 years and will be based at Section of Microbiology, Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen. The project will include collaboration with Marine Biology Section (Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen) and Department of Molecular Systems Biology (Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research – UFZ, Leipzig, Germany). The position is to be filled by 1.3.2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Qualifications

We are looking for a highly motivated and ambitious researcher with strong experience in biofilm microbiology, bacterial interactions and ecology. Applicants should have the following qualifications:

  • PhD in Microbiology, Bioengineering or equivalent
  • Hands on and documented experience with cultivation and analysis of bacteria, and use of in vitro biofilm models
  • Previous experience with 3D bioprinting, confocal microscopy analysis of bacterial communities, proteomics/Protein-SIP and/or analysis of -omics datasets will be seen as an advantage
  • Fluency in English
Main tasks of the appointed applicant

  • Development of methodology for 3D printing of leaves and design of model
  • Visual analysis of spatial community structure using confocal microscopy
  • Analysis of interspecific bacterial interactions using proteomics and Protein-SIP
  • Analysis of impact of specific bacterial localization on metabolic interactions based on cell-printing
