Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Field of Mass Spectrometry and Metal/Protein Chemistry

The successful applicant for this position in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, SDU will be working in a project focused on metal-induced modifications of proteins and peptides. The analytical technique is advanced mass spectrometry. 

Topic/background: Peptides are attractive for therapeutic drug discovery because of their potential for high potency, few side-effects, high target specificity, and low toxicity. The market for peptide drugs was estimated to be $10-15 billion in 2010, and is expected to increase in the years to come. An important characteristic of more than 50% of all biologically active peptides in humans is that they are C-terminally amidated (-CONH2). Consequently, a demand for a cost-effective process for production and purification of amidated peptides exists.

Job description: The successful applicant will be responsible for conducting fundamental investigations to uncover the potential of metal-photo induced catalysis to introduce C-terminal amidation into biological relevant peptides/proteins. Experiments include peptide synthesis, protein extraction from biological samples, photo-chemical reactions, isotopic labeling of samples, mass spectrometric analysis, and data handling. 

This position is subject to the entry into force of grant agreement no 646603 by and between the European Research Council Executive Agency (ERCEA)  and University of Southern Denmark (SDU) and thereby funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme.
