Postdoctoral fellowships (fixed-term contracts): Centre for Urban Network Evolutions (UrbNet)

The Centre for Urban Network Evolutions (UrbNet) is looking to recruit a number of postdoctoral researchers to work on projects within the centre’s research agenda. The postdocs will contribute to joint centre projects on urban societies and their networks. The projects should pertain to the archaeology and history of the Indian Ocean World, the Near East, the Mediterranean or Northern Europe from the 3rd century BCE until medieval times. The positions are for one year with the possibility to extend for a further year. They will commence on 1 February 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

About the projects
The projects issue from UrbNet’s core research themes and agendas, including data from the major fieldwork projects conducted by the centre. We also welcome other project ideas and encourage innovative projects that might contribute to the centre’s agenda. Read more under “About UrbNet” below. We encourage applicants to contact the centre director and vice director as early possible to discuss potential project ideas.

We are looking for candidates who are specialised and interested in the following themes:

  1. The disuse, appropriation and recycling of monumental structures of the Roman period in the Near East, the Central Mediterranean and the northern provinces, and the reuse of building materials, including lime kilns, lead and metal fitting, architectural glass and building stone.
  2. Environmental change and landscape management from Antiquity to the Middle Ages.
  3. The relationship between urban centres, landscape use and settlement history in Mesopotamia, the Near East and Central Italy from Antiquity to the Middle Ages.
  4. Innovations and diffusions in craft technology and the circulation and reuse of copper alloys, glass and ceramics in Post-Roman Northern Europe.
  5. The geoarchaeology of urban stratigraphies.
Each postdoc will work on a specific project and produce single- and co-authored publications while also contributing to the wider scope of their respective research groups.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a PhD degree in archaeology or equivalent qualifications at an international level.

Applicants must also be able to document:
  • Relevant academic publications
  • Research in archaeology on topics relevant to the UrbNet research agenda
  • The ability to teach courses within the framework of classical or/and historical archaeology at undergraduate and graduate level
  • The ability to speak/write professional/academic English

Applicants are asked to outline their research interests and how they might contribute to the UrbNet research agenda (max. two pages).

Please submit up to five publications for assessment. Note that only publications that are actually submitted with the application will be assessed; a list of publications is not sufficient. Applications which are not accompanied by publications will not be assessed.

Professional references or recommendations should not be included. Applicants who are selected for interview may be asked to provide professional references.

Applicants are expected to contribute to the department’s academic environment. We emphasise the importance of good working relationships, both among colleagues and with our students.

About UrbNet
The Centre for Urban Network Evolutions (UrbNet) was founded in 2015 as a groundbreaking archaeological research initiative exploring the evolution of urbanism and urban networks from the Hellenistic Period to the Middle Ages. The centre is based at Aarhus University, School of Culture and Society, and is funded as a Centre of Excellence by the Danish National Research Foundation.
UrbNet aims to compare the archaeology of urbanism from medieval Northern Europe to the ancient Mediterranean and the Indian Ocean World, and determine how – and to what extent – urban networks catalysed societal and environmental expansions and crises in the past. The centre is firmly rooted in the humanities but enjoys close, collaborative ties with the natural sciences.

UrbNet aims to advance the understanding of the historical process of urban evolution, and it does so by developing the ability of archaeology to characterise the scale and pace of events and processes. Recently developed scientific techniques afford the potential for archaeology to refine the precision of dates, contexts and provenance ascribed to excavated materials. UrbNet’s key ambition has been to integrate these new forms of data as a new “high-definition” approach to the study of global and interregional dynamics.

UrbNet’s work comprises projects that intersect questions and problems concerning urban development and networks in the regions from Northern Europe via the Levant to the East Coast of Africa. It involves elaborate work on empirical material from a number of existing excavation projects, and the centre aims to make substantial contributions to theoretical and methodological developments in the field.

The School of Culture and Society
At the School of Culture and Society, the object of research and teaching is the interplay between culture and society in time and space:

- From the traditional disciplines of the humanities and theology to applied social research
- From Antiquity to the issues facing contemporary societies
- From Danish cultural forms to other very different worlds
- From local questions to global challenges
