Postdoctoral Position in Antimatter

The Department of Physics and Astronomy, Aarhus University, Denmark (www.phys.au.dk) has an opening for a postdoctoral fellow on the ALPHA antihydrogen experiment at CERN, Geneva (http://alpha.web.cern.ch/).

Starting Date and Period
The position is for 1 year and is available from 1 March 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Job description and your profile
ALPHA conducts precision measurements on atoms of antihydrogen in order to test fundamental symmetries. We seek highly motivated candidates to contribute to our program of spectroscopic and gravitational studies of trapped antihydrogen atoms. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in detection of antiproton annihilation events, DAQ and control software, and event analysis using machine learning techniques. The fellow will be employed by Aarhus University but permanently stationed at CERN in Geneva. The appointment will be for one year. ALPHA postdocs are expected to contribute to all aspects of the experiment, including experimental shift work, which takes place 24 hours per day during the operating period of the Antiproton Decelerator. The successful candidate will work under the direct supervision of the ALPHA Spokesperson, Professor Jeffrey Hangst. The position is funded by a grant from the Carlsberg Foundation.

The ALPHA Collaboration at CERN is the only group in the world currently able to study the properties of atoms of antihydrogen, the antimatter equivalent of hydrogen.

What we offer
The successful candidate is offered:

  • access to a well-developed research infrastructure at one of the world’s most prestigious physics facilities
  • a research climate inviting lively, open and critical discussion within and across different fields of research
  • a working environment with teamwork, close working relations, network activities among young scientists and social activities

Place of Work
The place of work is CERN, CH-1211 Geneva 23, Switzerland and the area of employment is Aarhus University with related departments, stationed at CERN.

Application deadline
15 January 2021.

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the appointment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee, and each applicant is given the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that concerns him/her self. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Letter of reference
If you want a referee to upload a letter of reference on your behalf, please state the referee’s contact information when you submit your application. We strongly recommend that you make an agreement with the person in question before you enter the referee’s contact information, and that you ensure that the referee has enough time to write the letter of reference before the application deadline. Unfortunately, it is not possible to ensure that letters of reference received after the application deadline will be taken into consideration.
