Postdoctoral position in indology

The Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies (ToRS), Faculty of Humanities, University of Copenhagen (UCPH), Denmark, invites applications for a 3-year postdoctoral position in Indology to be filled by September 1, 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Job content
The Department of Cross-Cultural and Regional Studies at the University of Copenhagen seeks to maintain a strong research environment in Indology by filling a three-year post-doctorate position. The position will be connected to Modern India and South Asia Studies, Religious Studies, and a newly formed interest in Ancient Civilisations in which courses will be developed and taught.

Principal responsibilities will include the establishment of an Indological laboratorium that will house over 3000 Indian manuscripts, which together with the existing Indic collections at the Danish Royal Library will keep Copenhagen at a high international academic standing in Indological studies. In this regard, the person selected for the post doc will be expected to seek external funding for the prolongation of Indological research, to coordinate research activities around Indological studies, and to introduce digitalisation and IT in connection with research and teaching. Teaching will take up 20% of the working hours per year.

Qualification requirements

In order to be considered for the position applicants must have research qualifications at least corresponding to what can be achieved as part of a successfully completed PhD within a relevant field.

The successful candidate should have a strong background in classical Indian languages and culture, and preferably some knowledge of at least one modern Indian language, such as, Hindi.

Only material in Danish, Norwegian, Swedish and English can be expected to be assessed.

Appointment procedure
After the application deadline, the Head of Department selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Appointment Committee. All applicants are notified whether their application has been accepted for assessment. The Dean subsequently appoints an expert assessment committee tasked with carrying out an assessment of the selected applicants for the specific post. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee. Applicants are ultimately offered the opportunity of commenting on the part of the assessment relating to themselves before the appointment is finalized.

Applicants will be continuously informed about the progress of the procedure by e-mail.

Salary and conditions of employment
Terms of appointment and salary will be in accordance with an agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). The salary range starts at DKK 34,000 (EUR 4,560) per month + a 17,1 % contribution to the pension scheme. It is possible to negotiate salary supplements on an annual basis.

The Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) have further agreed on a protocol that makes it possible for international researchers employed by the University to achieve a pension exemption, whereby the pension contribution will be paid out as salary.
