Postdoctoral Position in Molecular Microbiology and Chemical-genetic Screening

At the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, SDU we are seeking a motivated and independent postdoctoral candidate with a keen interest in bacterial stress responses and/or high-throughput chemical screening methods for a two-year position in the group of Associate Professor Clare Kirkpatrick. The position should start on 1 January 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The successful candidate will take charge of chemical library choice, screen design and execution, validation and follow-up investigation of selected hits and their molecular mechanism of action. We anticipate that in the long term this project will open new lines of investigation into anti-virulence (rather than classical antimicrobial) strategies for combating pathogenic bacteria, by blocking signals which allow them to perceive the presence of host cells and initiate virulence gene expression.

The group is part of the Research Unit for Molecular Microbiology which offers a collaborative and international research environment with fully equipped shared laboratories including our own chemical screening platform. Opportunities to participate in undergraduate teaching and co-supervise undergraduate or Master's-level projects, are also available.

Essential skills and experience:

  • A PhD degree in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Genetics or a related field, or should expect to complete the PhD degree before 1 January 2023
  • A documented strong experimental background in molecular microbiology
  • High intrinsic motivation and capacity for independent work
  • Excellent scientific communication skills
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Desirable skills and experience:

  • Experimental experience with high-throughput chemical screening, particularly phenotype-based screens in bacteria or other cell types
  • Experimental experience with bacterial genetics, (eg. construction of overexpression or knockout strains, gene expression analysis by promoter-reporter assay, q-RT-PCR)
  • Experience in working with NGS sequence data (eg. genome resequencing, RNA-Seq).

 Deadline: 30 September 2022.
