Postdoctoral position in MS-based proteomics

One fully funded postdoctoral fellow position for 2 years is available in the Proteomics Technology Development & Application group at The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Protein Research (CPR – http://www.cpr.ku.dk). The Center has been established at the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen, to promote basic and applied discovery research on human proteins of medical relevance. The Center comprises a wide range of expertise and resources including proteomics, protein production and characterization to disease mechanisms. The Proteomics Technology Development & Application group is led by Professor Dr. Michael L. Nielsen.

The Nielsen group focuses on developing novel proteomics methods & technologies for detailing cellular outcomes in a systems-level approach, with the aim to improve current understanding of cellular phenotypes and diseases. To this end, we employ cutting-edge mass spectrometry (MS)-based technologies and the Nielsen group has developed several novel proteomics methododologies for identification and quantification of various post-translational modifications (PTMs), including arginine methylation (Larsen et al, Science Signaling, 2016), ADP-ribosylation (Martello et al, Nature Communications, 2016; Jungmichel et al, Mol Cell.), SUMOylation (Hendriks et al, Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, 2017), citrullination (Christophorou et al, Nature, 2014), lysine biotinylation (Madsen et al, Nature Communications, 2015) and other cellular signalling events (Skotte et al., Cell Reports, 2018, Jungmichel et al, Cell Reports, 2014).

Project Description
The ideal candidate is expected to use cutting-edge proteomic technologies to address challenging biological questions in a systems-wide manner. Projects may entail system-wide analysis of emerging PTMs, including endogenous characterization of ADP-ribosylation or SUMOylation in health and disease. The Nielsen group has established unique methods for studying these modifications under physiological cellular conditions, and projects may include studying the modifications in cancer cell lines, tissue samples from model systems, or patient material to gain novel insights into the molecular mechanism surrounding ADP-ribosylation, SUMOylation, and the enzymatic machinery responsible for the dynamic regulation of the modifications. We expect that the selected candidate and associated projects will make a strong scientific impact, and are looking for a candidate with an excellent publication record that will thrive in a supportive and multi-disciplinary environment.

Estimated start date: Fall 2018 or later.

Qualifications
• The candidate is required to have PhD or equivalent degree in natural or medical science.
• Excellent scientific track record, including at least one publication as first author in a high quality, peer reviewed international journal.
• Prior experience with research areas involving post-translational modifications would be considered a distinct advantage.
• Prior experience in proteomics technology development and/or high resolution mass spectrometry is not essential, but would be considered an advantage.
• The candidate should be able to conduct independent and creative research, demonstrate scientific productivity, and show good inter-personal and communication skills.
• Good communication skills, both oral and written.
• An analytical aptitude for devising innovative scientific or technical solutions.
• Demonstrate enthusiasm, motivation, flexibility and confidence.

Place of employment and work
The employment is for 2 years and at CPR (http://www.cpr.ku.dk), University of Copenhagen, located in central Copenhagen. The research environment at CPR is vibrant, ambitious, and international, with approx. 30 different nationalities currently represented. The Center comprises modern laboratories and state-of-the-art facilities within protein science. Seminars with high-profile international speakers and regular internal research seminars are organized at CPR.

Terms of salary and employment
Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and The Academics Central organization. Currently, the monthly salary is around 33,000 – 36,000 DKK (around 4,500 – 4,800 euro) plus 17.1 % in pension contribution.
