Postdoctoral Researcher in Science Communication

A one-year, full-time position as a postdoctoral researcher in science communication is available at the University of Copenhagen, with the possibility of a one-year extension. The position starts on 1 May 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Department of Science Education seeks an excellent early career scholar for a position as a postdoctoral researcher in science communication. The position involves research and teaching within science communication with a particular emphasis on the interfaces between science communication and ‘informal’ science education (i.e. science education in museums, science centres, zoos, aquaria, etc.). The position will be attached to the research group Out-of-School Science Education (

The postdoctoral researcher’s duties will primarily include research, including publishing and co-publishing research with other members of the research group. The researcher will participate in developing research projects in the group, and in fundraising for those projects. Further, the postdoctoral researcher’s duties include research-based teaching with associated examination obligations within (but not limited to) the Department’s course portfolio in science communication.

We seek a candidate with a PhD in science communication or a similar research discipline. The candidate should have a strong beginning research record in science communication research, with publications that are internationally competitive, and/or have the potential to make a future impact. Further, the ability to undertake teaching and supervision tasks relatively independently, from early on in the employment period, would be an advantage.

The position represents a strategic exploration of the interfaces between science communication research and ‘informal’ science education research. Candidates should therefore submit a two-page outline of their research interests and plans, including an indication of where they see potentials in these interfaces and how their research plans could involve these potentials.

Terms of employment
The employment as postdoc is a full time and fixed-term position for one year, with the opportunity for a one-year extension. Starting date is 1 May 2020 or according to agreement.

Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Currently, the monthly salary starts at 33,600 DKK/ approx. 4,480 Euro (April 2018-level). Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated. The employer will pay an additional 17.1 % to your pension fund.

Non-Danish and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.

The position is covered by the “Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at the Universities” of June 28, 2013.

The employment is furthermore covered by the rules concerning assistant professors/researchers as described in the Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities of 2020.

The University of Copenhagen has a policy of Danish/English parallel language use. All information on the UCPH-website is in both English and Danish. Your contract will be in English and any administrative help is available in English. Depending on your language competencies, your teaching/supervision duties will be in Danish or English.

The further process
After the expiry of the deadline for applications, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the hiring committee. All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment by an unbiased assessor. Once the assessment work has been completed each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicant him/herself.
