Postdoctoral Scientist - Epidemiology

We are seeking a talented and highly motivated epidemiologist/biostatistician to work on research related to the epidemiology of mental disorders, with a focus on eating disorders or depression. The one or two three-year positions are for employment April 1st 2021 or soon hereafter, and will be based at the National Centre for Register-based Research, Aarhus University, a leading international research group investigating psychiatric epidemiology. The centre has a strong track record in collaboration with other Danish researchers and with the international research community.

In particular, we are looking for a researcher with skills in register-based research and biostatistics, pharmacoepidemiology or analytic epidemiology. The postdoctoral scientist will join a team based at the National Centre for Register-based Research, Aarhus, Denmark. The positions are funded by various external grants for research projects on the interplay of environmental and genetic factors for causes and courses of anorexia nervosa or a project on antidepressant use in pregnancy. Specific focus areas include comorbidities, prescription psychotropic drug use, as well as clinical and social outcomes.

The National Centre for Register-based Research has a wide range of collaborating partners including Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, US; Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden; University of Queensland, Queensland Centre for Mental Health Research, Department of Psychiatry, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York and worldwide collaborators in the Eating Disorder Genetic Initiative, and via the iPSYCH consortium.

Academic and personal qualifications

  • Degree in health science, public health, epidemiology, statistics or similar, with a relevant PhD degree
  • Computational expertise in analysing Danish health registers or similar data sources
  • Experience with statistical analyses using packages such as Stata, SAS or R
  • Experience with the analytic methods applied in psychiatric epidemiology or pharmacoepidemiology
  • Excellent collaborative, communication and presentation skills
  • Scientifically self-motivated and creative
  • Ability to work both independently and in structured groups, and take responsibility for the complete research process from idea phase to publication and presentation of results
  • Fluent in spoken and written English (English is the working language)

About us
NCRR – the National Centre for Register-based Research – is a section at the Department of Economics and Business Economics, Aarhus BSS, financed mainly by external research funds (www.ncrr.au.dk). The Centre houses an internationally acknowledged group of researchers in psychiatric epidemiology, regularly publishing scientific articles (http://econ.au.dk/the-national-centre-for-register-based-research/publications/. In addition to its own research, the Centre also conducts guidance and counselling related to register-based research projects, validation and data management of register data, as well as development of methods for analysis of register data.

Niels Bohr Professorship: Until the end of 2022, NCRR hosts Niels Bohr Professor John McGrath from Brisbane, Australia. Professor McGrath is world leading in psychiatric research and the grant from the Danish National Research Foundation has enabled him to establish an exciting research project at NCRR in close collaboration with the employees of the center. iPSYCH: iPSYCH is a central project in the research at NCRRfocusing on the environmental and genetic architecture of mental disorders (www.ipsych.au.dk/). iPSYCH is the world’s largest study of its kind and presently includes approx. 146,500 persons, of whom approx. 7,500 have an anorexia nervosa diagnosis.

CIRRAU: The National Center for Register-based Research also houses CIRRAU – Center for Integrated Register-Based Research – funded by Aarhus University for the purpose of promoting interdisciplinary register-based research (www.cirrau.au.dk). CIRRAU provides the necessary and basic data infrastructure for the implementation of several registry-based research projects.

The appointment is made in accordance with the Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at Danish Universities as well as the circular on the Collective Agreement for Academics Employed by the State (in Danish).
