Professor in Arctic marine ecology

A position as (full) professor within the field of Arctic marine ecology is available at the Department of Bioscience, Aarhus University. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.

The candidate is expected to strengthen and expand the departments existing research groups studying effects of climate changes on Arctic marine ecosystems and biodiversity. The department is strongly engaged in several Arctic monitoring programs, especially the Greenland Ecosystem Monitoring (GEM) and their linkages to various initiatives, such as Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF), are central to the research and advisory activities in the department. The department’s research and advisory activities are project-based with a solid tradition in cross-disciplinary research and international collaboration.

Requirements
The candidate should have an internationally strong research profile within marine ecosystem ecology and solid research experience from Arctic ecosystems. We expect the candidate to have a background in biology or similar as base for a strong scientific career and an extensive international network. The candidate should be able to combine short-term research, long-term monitoring and experimental work across a broad selection of Arctic taxa and environments. Research areas of special interest include, but are not limited to, Arctic marine biodiversity, population ecology and the biogeochemistry and productivity of Arctic coastal areas related to the changing cryosphere. The candidates should demonstrate experience with an ecosystem approach with focus on the diverse impacts of a warming climate on coastal ecosystems structure and functioning. We expect a solid theoretical and practical background and proven experience in organizing and leading multidisciplinary research projects.

Strong collaborative as well as research management skills are required as is an extensive international network. A documented track record of attracting substantial external funding is essential. The candidates should be able to demonstrate excellent scientific leadership and experience in successful supervision of postdocs and Ph.D. students.

Department of Bioscience
The Department of Bioscience is engaged in research programs, teaching curricula and consultancy covering all major biological sub-disciplines, and we conduct world-class research in the areas of Arctic environment and ecosystems, aquatic biology and ecology, biodiversity and conservation biology. The Department currently employs approximately 250 academic and technical staff.

The department has an international leading role within Arctic research and advisory activities relating to the impact of environmental change on Arctic nature and the society. The department has a central role in research on effects of climate change on the Arctic ecosystems and communities. The major areas of focus are Arctic terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity, carbon exchange between land and atmosphere, and the underlying biological, chemical and physical processes, as well as the interactions between these. We play a leading role in providing advice to the authorities of Greenland on environmental issues including wildlife health and medicine and the relation to human health in the Arctic. We are also deeply involved in the Greenland Ecosystem Monitoring program (GEM, http://www.g-e-m.dk) and run the interdisciplinary and internationally acclaimed research station, Zackenberg (http://www.zackenberg.dk).

Place of Employment
The Department of Bioscience currently has three work locations; one in Roskilde, one in Silkeborg and one in Kalø. The latter two are located in Jutland and will move to the Aarhus University Campus within the next 2-3 years. The place of employment will be either in Roskilde (Frederiksborgvej 399, DK-4000 Roskilde) or in Silkeborg (Vejlsøvej 25, DK-8600 Silkeborg).

Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Technical Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
