Professor in Environmental Crop Science

The Department of Agroecology, Section of Climate and Water, invites applications for a professor in the field of crop science and crop ecology. The ambition is to develop new sustainable crop production strategies and methods by integrating research on crop, climate, soil, water and nutrient household in high-yielding, high-quality cropping systems with low environmental footprint. The work comprise basic, strategic and applied research within the subject, with a focus on the dependence of crop production on water supply and adaptation to climate change. The professorship is expected to initiate new research activities nationally and internationally within the research field and to encourage cross-disciplinary research activities addressing innovative sensing, modelling and management tools.

We are looking for a dynamic and motivated scientist with strong research skills that have the ability and interests to work in a collaborative but competitive research environment. The position aim to strengthen ongoing activities at the Climate and Water Section. Overall research areas in the section include climate change mitigation and adaptation in agriculture, circular bioeconomy, agrohydrology and environmental crop science from field to global scale. The professorship is expected to consolidate and extend the strong position of the department in national and international research. The professor’s main tasks will be to conduct research, including scientific publication and communication within the above academic field, to lead and conduct research-based teaching at BSc, MSc and PhD level, promote fundraising within the research area and participate in knowledge transfer with society and public. The latter includes conducting and leading policy support as the subject area of the professorship is a part of the Department’s national public sector consultancy serving the Ministry of Environment and Food of Denmark.

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Be responsible for the development and leadership of the research area
  • Establish synergies between own research and related research activities to secure the needed interdisciplinary approaches
  • Maintain a strong national and international network of contacts with leading research groups, as well as pursuing industrial contacts within the agroindustry
  • Support the development of comprehensive research-based teaching activities and participate in assessments of students at Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD levels
  • Be responsible for effective knowledge exchange with society, industry and government
  • Successfully attract external research grants from a range of sources, including industry
  • Participate in MSc, PhD and post-doctoral training and be responsible for the educational guidance of assistant professors/postdocs.

Qualifications required:
The successful candidate must possess relevant academic qualifications and a proven record of scientific achievements at international level. Further professional and personal qualifications are emphasized:
  • PhD degree or equivalent qualifications within crop science and its relation to resources and the environment
  • A scientific record of high international standard within central parts of the research area at professor level
  • Proven teaching qualifications at university level and experience in supervising master and PhD students
  • A proven record in planning, implementing and managing large research projects in collaboration with national and international partners
  • Documented ability to attract research funding from external sources
  • Experience in the synthesis and communication of research outputs in the context of knowledge dissemination and scientific based advise for policy support

The Department of Agroecology
At the Department of Agroecology we study interactions between soil, plants, animals, humans and the environment in different agroecosystems for the production of food, feed, biomaterials and energy. Thus, we contribute to both fundamental knowledge generation and the attainment of sustainable production systems via state-of-the-art research, contracted policy advice, and education. We offer state-of-the-art laboratory, green house, semi-field and field scale research facilities, advanced computing capacities as well as an extensive national and international researcher network. Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Technical Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
