Professor in marine conservation ecology

A position as (full) professor within the field of marine conservation ecology is available at the Department of Bioscience, Aarhus University. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.

The candidate is expected to work with, strengthen and expand the existing marine research groups in the department, and particularly the research on anthropogenic impacts on sea birds and marine mammals. The department is responsible for several marine monitoring programs and stores long data series for the Danish Ministry of Environment and Food. The successful candidate is expected to further develop the research based on these data series and on the long-term marine mammal tracking program lead by the department. The department has a long tradition for providing advice to Danish and international authorities, and the successful candidate is expected to contribute to a further strengthening of this work and to develop externally funded cross-disciplinary research projects.

Requirements
The candidate should have an internationally strong research profile within the field of marine conservation ecology and extensive knowledge of the impacts of human activities on marine populations. We expect the candidate to have a Ph.D. in biology or similar and a wide-ranging international network. The candidate should be able to combine dedicated research, long-term monitoring and experimental work across a broad selection of marine taxa and environments. Research areas of special interest include, but are not limited to, marine mammal monitoring, effects of anthropogenic disturbances, species interactions, movement ecology, and population biology of marine mammals. The candidate should demonstrate a solid theoretical and practical background and proven experience with advisory work for authorities and private companies.

Strong collaborative skills and research management skills are required as is a documented track record of attracting substantial external funding. The candidate should be able to demonstrate excellent scientific leadership and have experience with supervision of postdocs and Ph.D. students.

In the assessment of candidates, strong emphasis and consideration will be given to:

  • Excellence in research demonstrated by publications in high ranking scientific journals and conferences;
  • Research impact, e.g., in terms of citations, participation in advisory boards and collaboration with industrial partners;
  • Experience and success in attracting funding for research projects from research foundations and industry;
  • A strong international research network and established research collaboration with academic and industrial partners;
  • Experience in MSc, PhD and post-doctoral training; and
  • Excellent communication skills.
We expect that you are fluent in spoken and written English and ideally in one additional European language. It is important to us that you are a team player and have strong inter-personal skills. You will be expected to learn spoken and written Danish within the first two to three years. Relevant courses will be offered.

Department of Bioscience
The Department of Bioscience is engaged in research programs, teaching curricula and consultancy covering all major biological sub-disciplines, and we conduct world-class research in the areas of aquatic biology and ecology, biodiversity and conservation biology across ecosystems from the Arctic to the tropics. The Department currently employs approximately 250 academic and technical staff.

The Department has a unique research environment at top international level in the field of aquatic biology and ecology. Our competencies cover a wide spectrum, from the biology of organisms to modelling water and nutrient cycles from land to sea. Research focus areas include human impact on species, the environment and the global nutrient cycle, the effects of global climate change on biological, chemical and physical processes in and around the aquatic environment, assessment of water quality and ecological status and studies on the effects of measures that can be used to manage and reduce the loss of carbon, nutrients and pollutants to the aquatic environment.

The Department plays a leading role in providing advice to the Danish authorities on environmental issues including implementation and assessment of EU marine directives. We are also deeply involved in the national marine monitoring programme (NOVANA) and engaged in the management of the large national environmental databases.

Place of Employment
The Department of Bioscience currently has three work locations; one in Roskilde, one in Silkeborg and one in Kalø. The latter two are located in Jutland and will move to the Aarhus University Campus within the next 2-3 years. The place of employment will be in Roskilde (Frederiksborgvej 399, DK-4000 Roskilde, Denmark).

Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Technical Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

The application must be in English and include a curriculum vitae, degree certificate, a complete list of publications, a statement of future research plans and information about research activities, teaching portfolio and verified information on previous teaching experience (if any). Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
