Professor in Perennial Cropping Systems

The Department of Agroecology, Section of Climate and Water, invites applications for a professor in Perennial Cropping Systems. The position aims to strengthen ongoing activities on developing more sustainable farming systems with a high share of perennial crops. Several environmental and climate indicators can be improved by shifting from annual to perennial cropping systems – e.g. nutrient use efficiency, nutrient losses, carbon storage, pesticide use, and biodiversity. The challenge is to improve the management of perennial cropping systems in order to maximize these benefits, while at the same time achieving high yields with specific qualities. Perennial crops, which are today mainly forage crops, have a limited market for traditional agricultural use. The challenge is therefore also to develop new market opportunities for perennial crops.

We seek an innovative, internationally competitive research leader with a proven record on the development of sustainable cropping systems, and with a special focus on perennial systems. Focus of the research should be on crop establishment, productivity, and quality and on cropping effects on soil quality, nutrient losses, greenhouse gas emissions, and biodiversity. Proven skills on cooperation within a highly interdisciplinary research field will be important. You will be contributing to the vibrant and highly motivating international environment of the Climate and Water Section. We seek a professor who sees possibilities in developing this research area in cooperation with other research groups, nationally and internationally, including also the industry and public authorities with the aim of providing novel solutions to our grand challenges and underpinning basic knowledge within the area. The appointment includes research, supervision, teaching and outreach at professor level.

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Be responsible of developing the research area on perennial cropping systems with implementation of basic and applied research
  • Establish synergies between own research and related research activities to secure a strong interdisciplinary approach
  • Be able to synthesize knowledge across the whole biobased value circle, and participate in building scenarios for possible new developments within agriculture to support the green transition
  • Maintain a strong national and international network of contacts with leading research groups, as well as pursuing industrial contacts within the biobased industries
  • Support the development of comprehensive research-based teaching activities and participate in assessments of students at BSc, MSc and PhD levels
  • Be responsible for effective knowledge exchange with society, industry and the Danish Government
  • Successfully attract external research grants from industry, national and international sources
  • Participate in MSc, PhD and post-doctoral training and be responsible for the educational guidance of assistant professors/postdocs.

Qualifications required:
  • PhD degree or equivalent qualifications within crop science or related research fields
  • Documented experience as an international research leader in relation to perennial cropping systems and biomass use
  • Documented research qualifications at professorship level
  • Experience in stakeholder involvement in co-designing and co-evaluating scenarios for the future development within agriculture and the bioeconomy
  • Experience in communication of research in a wide context to both academic, industrial and public audiences
  • Documented ability to strengthen national and international cooperation within the research area
  • Documented ability to attract research funding from both national and international sources
  • Documented experience with supervision of postdocs, PhD and MSc students
  • Documented teaching experience and a demonstrated ability to develop new forms of educational material
  • Documented leadership skills in relation to international collaboration and on the development of interdisciplinary research cooperation.
