Professor in statistical genetics

The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Aarhus University wishes to strengthen its research expertise and activities in statistical genetics with focus on statistical and computational method development in support of the two strategic focus areas ‘Modelling of life’ and ‘New breeding technologies’ (please see the strategy of the department). In addition to a strong research program the candidate is expected to play a central role in recruiting and supervising pre- and post-doctoral fellows as well as in teaching courses at the department. The position is open from 1st of September 2019.

The position
Use of genomic information sources from high-throughput platforms such as DNA-chips and whole genome sequencing is currently transforming plant and animal breeding programs as well as for personalized medical treatments. Flexible statistical methods with high accuracy is a key driver for this transformation. Modern breeding programs generates large amounts of data leading to large and complex models for estimation and prediction. Efficient implementation of methods for large scale is therefore important. The candidate is expected to develop a strong and competitive research program in the area of method development, implementation, and application of statistical genetics for the integration of diverse and complex omics information sources in order to make inferences on underlying biological phenomena. The majority of the activity at the department is externally funded and the incumbent, therefore, is expected to be able to attract substantial external funding.

Qualifications
The applicant should hold a PhD degree in quantitative genetics, statistics, mathematics, computer science, or similar fields. The applicant must possess an excellent scientific track record related to statistical genetics, strong teaching skills, excellent skills in oral and written English communication, a documented excellent ability to attract external funding, as well as a demonstrated capacity to establish and maintain collaboration with diverse groups both within as well as outside the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics.

The Center for Quantitative Genetics and Genomics (QGG) at Aarhus University (AU) is a major center for research and education in quantitative genetics, quantitative genomics, and animal and plant breeding. The center is part of the Department for Molecular Biology and Genetics. The place of work is the AU Foulum Campus, Blichers Allé 20, DK-8830 Tjele, 70 km from Aarhus, but there is a planned move to a new Campus in Aarhus in 2021.

This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated.
