Professor in Structural Microbiology

The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Aarhus University wishes to strengthen its research expertise and activities in structural biology and microbiology. Candidates contributing to our departmental strategy within the areas of “Structural Biology” and “Molecular Medicine” are preferred. The position is available from August 1st 2021 or as soon as possible hereafter.

Job description
The tasks of the professor include:

  • To define and lead an internationally competitive research program focused on structural, functional, genetic and biophysical characterization of biochemical pathways and mechanisms for regulation of gene expression in microbes
  • To engage in translational and applied research supporting future clinical applications and establishment of a sustainable society based on renewable resources
  • To manage and undertake teaching in courses for students in molecular biology, molecular medicine and related programs at bachelor, master and PhD level.
  • To define and supervise experimental project for Bachelor, Master’s, and PhD students
  • To take advantage of local and nearby cutting edge X-ray, neutron and electron microscopy based large infrastructure for structural biology.
  • To actively contribute to methods development and strengthening of the user community around large infrastructures for structural biology.
  • To attract external funding from national and international funding bodies for own and collaborative research with colleagues at the department and external Danish and international collaborations.
  • To show leadership by actively engaging in the administration and strategic development of the department and to establish interdisciplinary collaboration within own and other relevant departments at Aarhus University
  • To mentor junior researchers with respect to applications for external funding and career development.

Your profile
Applicants must document:
  • A PhD degree in Molecular Biology, Biology, Biomedicine, Chemistry or a related relevant field
  • Research qualifications at professorship level in structural biology including a strong publication profile
  • Nationally or internationally recognized leadership in a field of research relevant to structural microbiology as defined in this call
  • The ability to attract substantial external funding over a longer period of time.
  • An ability to deliver high quality and innovative teaching/supervision at bachelor, master and PhD level
  • An ability to work closely and build long term relationships with internal and external collaborators/stakeholders.
  • A history of a research group with an unbiased gender balance and a proper balance between national and international students/postdoctoral fellows.

The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics
The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics is part of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Aarhus University and comprises research within the areas Molecular Medicine, Structural Biology, Systems Biology and Plant Molecular Biology. There are currently 220 full time scientific staff and 140 PhD students. The department is responsible for two educations: Molecular Biology and Molecular Medicine with yearly uptake of 160 students in total. Application procedure
Shortlisting is used. This means that after the deadline for applications – and with the assistance from the assessment committee chairman, and the assessment committee if necessary, – the head of department selects the candidates to be evaluated. The selection is made on the basis of an assessment of who of the candidates are most relevant considering the requirements of the advertisement. All applicants will be notified within 6 weeks whether or not their applications have been sent to an expert assessment committee for evaluation. The selected applicants will be informed about the composition of the committee and will receive his/her assessment. Once the recruitment process is completed a final letter of rejection is sent to the deselected applicants.

Natural Sciences refers to the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Danish Universities under the Danish Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.

Appointment shall be in accordance with the collective labour agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. Salary depends on seniority as agreed between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Confederation of Professional Associations.
