Professor of Diabetes Epidemiology

The Department of Public Health at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University and Steno Diabetes Center, Aarhus invites applications for a position as Professor in the field of Diabetes Epidemiology as soon as possible. The position is a half-time position.

Department of Public Health
As a professor at the Department of Public Health, you will be part of an ambitious and internationally recognised department, where we work together to promote public health through research into areas that can prevent, treat and alleviate disease. We are involved in broad collaboration both internally and externally. We share our knowledge with citizens, decision-makers, business and industry, practitioners and other researchers – in municipalities, in the regions and both nationally and internationally. The department either contributes to or is responsible for teaching in medicine, public health science, sport science, optometry and nursing. At the Department of Public Health, you will have approx. 200 colleagues, including ninety academic staff members and a corresponding number of PhD students. We work closely with one another across different fields of study and prioritise a healthy work environment. The general tone among colleagues is informal. Steno Diabetes Center, Aarhus
Steno Diabetes Centre Aarhus (SDCA) is established under Central Denmark Region with a donation from the Novo Nordisk Foundation. SDCA plays a central role in increasing efforts in diabetes in both Central Denmark Region, nationally and internationally.

SDCA is consolidating as one of the world’s leading research environments in clinical diabetes research in collaboration with Aarhus University (AU), the other Steno Diabetes Centers and other Danish and International research environments; in this way, SDCA will play a pivotal role in diabetes research focused on new efforts in treatment and prevention.

The center is located at Hedeager 3, Aarhus N and is organizationally a part of Aarhus University Hospital.

Your job responsibilities and your competences
We are looking for a candidate with a strong academic career focused on diabetes epidemiology and a clear track record in leading a diverse research team. We expect the successful candidate to take an active role in developing the field of diabetes epidemiology using innovative methods in collaboration with clinicians, patients and the cross-disciplinary ("tværfaglig") research group at Steno Diabetes Center Aarhus. Moreover we are looking for a candidate who is internationally recognised and leading in the field.

The professor is expected to advance Danish and global research in diabetes epidemiology by leading an existing dynamic, creative and internationally oriented research team. The diabetes epidemiology research environment in Aarhus has a longstanding tradition, which has been strengthened in the past 5 years. The professor is expected to continue to build on the strengths of the present research portfolio, and is expected to have experience in several of the following research lines:

  • Screening for (pre)diabetes and its complications
  • Epidemiology of diabetic complications, with a focus on diabetic neuropathy
  • Epidemiology of diabetes risk throughout the life course, with a focus on longitudinal risk patterns and risk transmission across generations
  • Use of large-scale data resources, including administrative health registers for epidemiological research
  • Development of novel epidemiological approaches for the evaluation of improved multidisciplinary offerings to improve the lives of people with diabetes
The professor is expected to work closely with national and international collaborators and to make a strong effort to strengthen and expand these networks through the sharing of knowledge, methods, joint projects and exchange of researchers.

The professor is expected to take a leading role in developing, coordinating and delivering teaching modules focused on diabetes epidemiology, at the undergraduate level for both the Health Science and Medicine degree programmes. In addition, he/she is expected to supervise and teach at the graduate level, including main/co-supervison of PhD students and to contribute to national and international educational programmes targeted at wider audiences.

The professor is expected to participate in the academic environments at both the Department of Public Health and at Steno Diabetes Center Aarhus, and to encourage bridge connections between the two. The expectation is that as leader of the diabetes epidemiology research area, the professor will define an ambitious vision and strategy for the development of the research area in Aarhus and take initiatives to develop, design, obtain funding and carry out new projects that will realise this vision.

We expect you to be fluent in oral and written English. International applicants are expected to learn Danish, and Aarhus University arranges Danish teaching.

Your place of work will be the located at SDCA Hedeager 3, Aarhus N and is organizationally a part of Aarhus University Hospital and at the Department of Public Health, Bartholins Allé 2, 8000 Aarhus C.

Terms of employment
  • In making the appointment, emphasis will be placed on a high degree of original production at an internal level and experience from teaching at different levels as well as contributions to the development of teaching activities and teaching material, hereby documenting that the applicant has developed the academic discipline from a research and teaching perspective.
  • Moreover, there will be an assessment of the applicant’s ability to perform research and teaching management tasks.Further information on the appointment procedure can be found in the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities.
  • The appointment is in accordance with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (Akademikerne).
  • Remuneration is in accordance with the above, and the Salary agreement catalogue for staff at Health.
  • The yearly base salary for a fulltime professor is DKK 758,977.64 (including a position related supplement, a pre-agreed professor supplement and pension (17.1%)). Additional supplement(s) can be negotiated dependent on experience, special qualifications and performance of special functions. Professors have the authority to negotiate pay on their own behalf.
  • Researchers recruited from abroad are offered a special researcher tax scheme with a lower tax rate.
  • Travel and moving expenses may be covered according to the employee in question and, to a limited extent, the accompanying family.
