The School of Communication and Culture at Aarhus University invites applications for the position of full professor of information studies with a focus on science, technology and society studies (STS). The position is based at the Department of Digital Design and Information Studies.

The appointment is full time and tenured and begins on 1 December 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The School of Communication and Culture is committed to diversity and encourages all qualified applicants to apply regardless of gender, race, religion or belief, political views, sexual orientation, age, disability, or national, social or ethnic origin. Ensuring gender balance at the Department of Digital Design and Information Studies is a high priority, and we particularly encourage women to apply for this position. No applicant will be given preferential treatment, and all applicants will be assessed on the basis of their qualifications for the position in question.

The position
At the Department of Digital Design and Information Studies, information studies research is rooted in an interdisciplinary socio-technical tradition that critically explores information technology in relation to individuals, organisations and society. Core areas are participatory IT, STS, the philosophy of technology, user-driven innovation, digital communication, digital aesthetics and human-computer interaction. Diverse and innovative methodologies are represented and encouraged at the department.

We are seeking an applicant with research interests and teaching experience related to STS who can help further develop STS-related research at the department. These could include areas such as healthcare IT and practices, IT and organisations, participation and design from a post-humanist/STS perspective, surveillance society and technology, post-phenomenology and the philosophy of technology, digital social research, and datafication and digital methods.

We emphasise qualitative methodologies for the research of humans and IT through mainly empirical and ethnographic studies. With regard to research methods, the applicant should have experience of qualitative and/or mixed-method approaches. The successful applicant is expected to further develop research and teaching at the department and to strengthen the department’s research activity and output, as well as contributing to the high profile of information studies research at Aarhus University.

In sum, we are looking for an innovative and dedicated researcher with a strong academic record of accomplishment who will deliver research of the highest international standard, pursue research funding from external funding bodies, and contribute to teaching and supervising students on all degree levels. The successful applicant is expected to take a leading role in managing and developing the department’s research and educational activities, as well as in collaborating nationally and internationally with a range of external partners.

Research
The School of Communication and Culture emphasises the importance of high-quality research, interdisciplinary collaboration, participation in collective research projects, and the ability to attract external research funding. Accordingly, we are looking for applicants with a strong profile and track record in the study of STS at the highest international level, who have made significant scholarly contributions to theoretical and thematic developments within the field.

The successful applicant will also be expected to contribute to research initiatives in both the field of STS and the research community at the department in terms of new collaborative research projects with internal and external partners and external research funding organisations. To that end, the successful applicant will be expected to demonstrate research leadership and to take the lead in applying for international research funding and in developing international research networks.

Applicants must document a solid record of accomplishment in research leadership and international research cooperation. Information about the department’s research relevant for the position can be found on the department’s website.

Teaching and supervision
At Aarhus University, teaching is regarded as being just as important as research, and we believe it is important to be a competent and reflective teacher. We are seeking applicants who have solid experience in teaching at university level as well as in course, curriculum and degree programme development in the field of information studies.

The successful applicant will be expected to take part in the department’s teaching and supervision activities and to teach and supervise on the department’s Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD degree programmes, particularly on the Bachelor’s degree programme in information studies. Please indicate in your application which courses you could teach.

The successful applicant will also be expected to be the driving force in the ongoing development of degree programmes within the field of information studies, and, in this connection, experience of degree programme development at university-level institutions will be an advantage.

Given the international focus of the degree programmes, the successful applicant will be expected to teach in English as well as Danish.

Talent development
We are seeking applicants who have experience of supervising students at both BA and MA levels as well as supervising and helping to develop the careers of early-career researchers (PhD students, postdocs and assistant professors).

The successful applicant will be expected to supervise students at both BA and MA levels as well as supervising and helping to develop the careers of early-career researchers. The successful applicant will also be expected to recruit and supervise PhD students and participate in the development and implementation of PhD courses within the field.

Knowledge exchange
It is expected that the successful applicant will engage in knowledge exchange, for instance in terms of research collaboration with private companies, government consultancy, collaboration with civil society or the public dissemination of knowledge. The successful applicant is also expected to take part in public debates in areas related to the position.

The successful applicant will have excellent opportunities to engage in relevant collaborative initiatives with partners inside and outside Aarhus University.

Qualifications
Applicants must document a PhD degree or an equivalent qualification in a relevant field related to information studies as well as teaching and research experience commensurate with that attained through an associate professorship. Applicants must document relevant to the position:

  • a record of original international academic, peer-reviewed research publications at the highest international level, which has contributed to developments within information and STS studies
  • a record of accomplishment in research management and in attracting external research funding
  • experience of participation in international research collaboration
  • participation in both national and international research networks
  • extensive relevant teaching and supervision competences and experience at all university levels, including curriculum development
  • extensive competences in and commitment to supervision and the career development of early-career researchers (PhD students, postdocs and assistant professors) and the development of PhD courses
  • a significant record of accomplishment with regard to knowledge exchange.
Furthermore, it will be considered an advantage if applicants can document
  • time spent abroad working at one or more internationally recognised research institutions.
Finally, applicants must provide a research plan for the next 3 to 5 years and explain how their research can strengthen and develop research and teaching in STS at the department. Applicants should state their visions for future developments in the field and explain how their research can further strengthen cross-departmental research and teaching, including neighbouring academic areas at the department.

Please note that applications that do not include uploaded publications (maximum eight) will not be considered.

Work environment
Active participation in the daily life of the department is a high priority, and we emphasise the importance of good working relationships, both among colleagues and with our students. In order to maintain and develop the department’s excellent teaching and research environment, the successful applicant is expected to be present at the department on a daily basis.
